Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. LeJoia VanHook.
Hi Dr. LeJoia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In August 2006, I arrived at Fisk University as a kid from Chicago with no idea just how much my life was about to change.
I attended private Catholic schools from kindergarten through high school—and, by the way, my high school was an all-girls school! So, stepping onto the campus of an HBCU opened my eyes to an entirely new world. There was something powerful about walking those campus grounds. With every step, I felt myself becoming more empowered, more confident, and more aware of who I was and who I could become. Fisk didn’t just educate me; it elevated my state of being.
I graduated from Fisk in 2010 and immediately continued my educational journey, earning my master’s degree in 2012 and my doctorate in 2015. I am incredibly proud to be the first doctor in my family. If I’m being honest, that accomplishment still means so much to me. It represents sacrifice, perseverance, and the power of believing that you can become something you’ve never seen before. Interestingly enough, I tried to avoid education. My original goal was to work in Corporate Education. I didn’t think the traditional education field was for me. Then, in 2013, I stumbled upon a teaching program and decided to give it a try. It turns out, someone saw something in me that I hadn’t yet recognized in myself: was a natural educator. I was nervous in the beginning. I had never attended a public school, so I didn’t really know what to expect. I questioned whether I belonged in the classroom. But that decision became one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I spent six years teaching second and third grade before moving into an Academic Coach role in Clarksville, Tennessee. Today, I serve as a high school assistant principal. And through every role, one thing has remained constant: my students.
They may never fully understand what their hugs, their “I love yous,” their “I appreciate yous,” and especially their “That’s my school mom!” mean to me. Those moments have carried me through some of the most challenging days and continually remind me why I chose this work. I am deeply passionate about ensuring that students—from kindergarten through postsecondary education—are equipped with the knowledge, skills, resources, and support they need to experience academic success. Whether that means academic growth, proficiency, college and career readiness, or simply helping a student believe that they are capable, I want to be part of that journey. That passion ultimately led me to launch “Bright Futures Consulting, LLC”, a business created to provide families with an additional layer of academic support, accountability, advocacy, and guidance.
Through Bright Futures, I develop personalized academic success plans and provide virtual services designed to help parents and students navigate school with greater confidence and clarity. And then came another dream. I recently hosted my first Parent Empowerment Summit, a FREE community event designed to educate and empower K–12 families around topics that can sometimes feel overwhelming or unfamiliar—including IEPs, 504 Plans, college and career readiness, student attendance, and more. We also brought together principals from the elementary, middle, and high school levels for a candid panel discussion about the inner workings of schools, student discipline, and what parents need to know from the perspective of school leaders. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. I am still hearing the feedback from it.
And now, I am incredibly excited to announce that the Parent Empowerment Summit is going to Chicago..
The little girl from Chicago who left home for Fisk in 2006 is coming back not just as a former student but as an educator, school leader and now an educational consultant committed to building the bridge between home and school. This is bigger than an event for me. It is a full-circle moment. Chicago helped shape me. Fisk helped elevate me. Education gave me purpose. My students continue to inspire me. And now, through Bright Futures Consulting, I have the opportunity to pour back into families and communities. The work continues. The vision is growing. And the future is bright.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has certainly been a topsy-turvy ride. The field of education comes with so many ebbs and flow with the pressure of state testing, the rise in discipline challenges and educational apathy, and the constant shifts in the political and financial landscape. Some days are incredibly rewarding, while others can be challenging, exhausting, and downright stressful.
But then I see my students and teachers rise above those challenges. I see students discover their potential, overcome obstacles, and accomplish things they once believed were out of reach. I see teachers continue to show up, pour into their students, and give their best even when the demands of the profession feel overwhelming. Those moments make the ride a little smoother. Education may not always be easy, but it is meaningful and a calling. And despite the challenges, I remain grateful to be part of the work of shaping students, supporting educators, and helping create brighter futures.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an educational leader, consultant, and advocate who is deeply passionate about helping students and families navigate education with greater clarity, confidence, and support. With years in education, I have served as a teacher, instructional and academic coach, and currently as a high school assistant principal. My experience has given me a unique perspective of education from multiple sides of the table from the classroom to school leadership to working directly with families.
I specialize in student academic success, parent engagement, educational advocacy, instructional leadership, and helping families better understand and navigate the school system. Through my company, Bright Futures Consulting, LLC, I provide virtual educational consulting services that give families an additional layer of support, accountability, and guidance. I help parents and students develop academic success plans, prepare for school meetings, navigate resources such as IEPs and 504 Plans, and make informed decisions about their student’s educational journey.
I am also passionate about creating spaces where parents feel empowered rather than intimidated by the educational system. That passion led me to launch the Parent Empowerment Summit, a community-centered event designed to educate families about topics such as special education, attendance, college and career readiness, and student success while giving parents direct access to school leaders and educational experts.
I am most proud of the impact I have been able to make beyond my job title. I have helped students improve academically, supported educators through challenging instructional environments, secured millions of dollars in scholarships and grants for students, and created opportunities for families to become stronger advocates for their children. I am especially proud that my work continues to evolve from serving students within a school building to empowering families and communities outside of it.
What sets me apart is my ability to see education from multiple perspectives. I understand what it means to be a student, a teacher, a school leader, and now an educational consultant. I don’t believe parents should have to figure out the educational system alone, and I don’t believe students should have to navigate academic challenges without a plan. I bring a combination of educational expertise, leadership experience, strategic thinking, and genuine compassion to the work.
At the heart of everything I do is one simple belief: **when we build a stronger bridge between home and school, we create brighter futures for students.**
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very active, bubbly, joyful, and deeply rooted in my faith. In fact, my nickname growing up was Joyful, which I think is probably one of the best descriptions of who I was and still am.
One of my favorite stories about my childhood comes from my grandmother and mom. They always shared that one of their favorite memories of me happened when I was just one year old on Christmas morning. I walked into the living room, saw the massive amount of gifts under and surrounding the Christmas tree, and apparently looked around and simply said, “Thank You, Lord, for all You’ve done for me.”
I don’t remember that moment, but my grandmother and mom said they could do nothing but cry and smile. That story has always been special to me because, even though I was too young to remember it, I am grateful that the relationship with God reflected in that moment has remained a constant throughout my life.
I was definitely a social butterfly. I was bubbly, loved to laugh and joke around, and was voted “Miss Congeniality” on my cheerleading team. In high school, I was also voted “Most Likely to Succeed,” which feels pretty fitting when I look back on the path my life has taken.
Outside of school, I was just as active. I took piano lessons and played classical music and hymns. I spent a great deal of time at church with my grandmother, and I developed a deep love for singing in the choir. Church, music, family, and faith were all significant parts of my upbringing and helped shape the person I would eventually become.
I was also a child who loved experiences. I looked forward to trying new things, laughing until my stomach hurt, joking around with the people I loved, spending time with my family, and, of course, enjoying some of my favorite foods in Chicago!
When I think about the little girl I was, I would describe her as “joyful, curious, energetic, social, faith-filled, and full of life.” She loved people, loved experiences, and had a natural ability to connect with anyone and find something to smile about.
And honestly, I think a lot of that little girl is still with me today.
