Today we’d like to introduce you to Hush Club (Liz Kantor & Alasdair MacKenzie).
Hi Hush Club, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
We met and started playing music together in college––there weren’t a lot of people who wanted to play in bands at our college, so it wasn’t too hard to spot each other––and since then, we’ve released a bunch of music and performed all over the northeastern US.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Asking the world to care about your art can feel like an uphill battle, and we’ve had our share of songs and videos that didn’t perform as well as we’d hoped or concerts that didn’t draw as big crowds as we’d hoped. But it’s easier to laugh those things off when you’re working with someone you’ve known and trusted for a long time, so we’re lucky. And the best moments––sold-out headline shows, opening for Neon Trees, playing Levitate––have been sweeter because of the work that went into getting us there.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We’re always trying to make music with rhythms you can dance to, melodies that get stuck in your head, and lyrics that talk poetically but honestly about our lives. As WBUR put it, we make “groovy, swaying tunes with catchy guitar riffs and melodies about falling in and out of love.” Our latest single “Phantom Limb” is a good example of all these things, maybe our best one yet––check it out!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
For better or worse, we spend less time thinking about the industry than we do about our own music. We’re beyond grateful to everyone who’s come to a show, bought a t-shirt, or listened to us online, and we’re excited to take the band further career-wise. But making music we’re proud of is the most important thing to us.
