Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Guess.
Hi Daniel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m from Louisville, KY. I’ve been rapping and performing for decades. I’m a lifelong purveyor of all things hip hop. I’m a devoted wordsmith with emphasis on cadence, multi-syllable rhymes and wordplay. I thrive over soulful gritty production. I incorporate a lot of 90s pop culture, braggadocio and sophomoric humor in my music. I feel like I dont necessarily offer a sound thats never been heard before; instead, I have a modern and unique approach to the golden era rap I grew up with. My technical skill and humility lend me the “favorite rappers favorite rapper” archetype.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s definitely been a long road. I’ve been in multiple groups that have disbanded. My biggest successes came from my time with Skyscraper Stereo. We broke up around 2007 but we remain close. We’ve recently been doing reunion shows and the reception has been better then we could have hoped for! In a group setting it’s hard to get everyone on the same page with the same goals and communicate effectively. I honestly can’t complain about the road overall. It has been fairly smooth.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’d like to think of myself as a musician but I can’t play instruments or carry a tune. I think I’m more of a writer/lyricist. I put lots of detail and effort into my lyrics and I really take time to perfect each bar. I have a more complex flow with emphasis on multi-syllable rhymes. Recently I was voted by a local publication, do502, as a top 5 rapper in the city of Louisville. I was rated #5 and Skyscraper Srereo was #4. I never make any lists so that was definitely a proud moment for me. I feel like I’ve entered flow state and I’ve been writing and recording weekly with a myriad of new material on the horizon. I think what sets me apart is my commitment, resilience, humility and appreciation for the art. I’m a fan of the music before I am a creator and I have a very collaborative spirit with a genuine desire to see my peers succeed as well.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’m on Kr8vN8vs Records and our roster is stacked! I’m working on a trilogy of eps produced by J-Ideas. The first edition entitled “Paper” is out now on all platforms. The second ep “Rock” is being finalized and will release soon. Any guesses on what the third ep is called? I’m also a part of a collective known as “Off-Side Aux”. It’s myself, J-Ideas and Rocky Mata.
