Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Romero.
Hi Kayla , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into egg donation and surrogacy began in a very personal and unexpected way. Years ago, I worked as a nanny for a mother who had struggled with infertility and ultimately became a mother through egg donation . Watching her experience motherhood after everything she had been through truly touched my heart. It opened my eyes to infertility and showed me just how meaningful it can be to help someone build the family they have dreamed of.
That experience stayed with me and eventually inspired me to become an egg donor. I went on to complete six egg donation cycles, and knowing that I could give someone else the possibility of becoming a parent was incredibly rewarding.
My journey later led me to gestational surrogacy. I have now completed three surrogacy journeys, each one with its own unique story, challenges, relationships, and memories. Through these experiences, I have had the privilege of helping families welcome children they deeply wanted and loved long before they were born.
After three surrogacy journeys and six egg donations, I look back and realize just how much this path has shaped my life. What started with simply witnessing another woman’s journey through infertility became such an important chapter of my own story.
I am currently taking time to recover, enjoy this season of my life, and reflect on everything these journeys have meant to me. In the future, I may choose to complete one final surrogacy journey. If I do, it would be my fourth and last—a very special closing chapter to a journey that began all those years ago with one mother whose story touched my heart.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. Egg donation and surrogacy can be incredibly rewarding, but there is also a side of the journey that people don’t always see.
With egg donation, there are fertility medications, injections, frequent monitoring appointments, bloodwork and ultrasounds leading up to the egg retrieval. With surrogacy, there can also be weeks of medications and hormones while preparing your body for an embryo transfer and supporting an early pregnancy. After going through these processes multiple times, I learned just how physically and emotionally demanding fertility treatments can be.
The hormones can bring their own ups and downs, and there are days when you feel excited and hopeful and other days when you feel exhausted, emotional or overwhelmed. Surrogacy also comes with the normal challenges and risks of pregnancy, while knowing that every decision you make affects a family who has trusted you with something incredibly precious.
Not every journey goes exactly as planned, either. There can be uncertainty, waiting, difficult pregnancies, unexpected changes during labor and delivery, and recovery afterward. Those experiences have taught me a lot about my own strength, but they have also taught me to respect what my body has been through.
Despite the challenges, I have never lost sight of why I started. Seeing the families I have helped and knowing what these journeys have meant to them has made the difficult moments worth it. The highs and lows are both part of my story, and I think they have given me an even deeper appreciation for just how extraordinary the road to parenthood can be.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Much of what I am most proud of has centered around helping others create families. Through six egg donation cycles and three gestational surrogacy journeys, I have gained years of firsthand experience with fertility treatments, IVF, embryo transfers, pregnancy, childbirth and the emotional side of assisted reproduction.
I have also used my experiences to educate and connect with others online. I enjoy sharing the real side of egg donation and surrogacy—the exciting moments, but also the medications, appointments, hormones, waiting, pregnancy, recovery and challenges that aren’t always talked about.
What sets me apart is that I have experienced this world from several different perspectives. I have been an egg donor, a gestational surrogate and, most importantly, a mother myself. I’ve seen firsthand how deeply people can long to become parents and what it means to be trusted with helping someone build their family.
I’m most proud of the families I’ve been able to help along the way. Knowing that something I chose to do with my life has helped bring deeply wanted children into the world is something I will carry with me forever. If I decide to complete one final surrogacy journey in the future, it will close a very meaningful chapter of my life—and one that I am incredibly grateful to have experienced.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
One thing I would love for readers to understand is that this isn’t a path many women will ever experience, and it certainly isn’t the right path for everyone—but somehow, it has worked for me.
When I first became an egg donor, I never imagined that years later I would be able to say I had completed six egg donation cycles and three surrogacy journeys. It is definitely an unconventional chapter of my life, but it has become a meaningful part of who I am.
There have been sacrifices, physical challenges, emotional highs and lows, and moments when I have questioned whether I could do it again. But there have also been incredible moments that very few people ever get to experience—watching intended parents finally meet the baby they have waited and hoped for is something that is difficult to put into words.
I also think it’s important to show that there isn’t one “right” way for a woman to make a difference. For me, being able to use something my body was capable of doing to help another person experience parenthood has been incredibly meaningful.
I may have one final surrogacy journey left in me, or this may be where my story ends. Either way, I am proud of the chapter I have already written and grateful for every family, every lesson and every experience that came with it. It’s not a life most women would choose—but it has been a life that, in its own unique way, has worked beautifully for me.
