Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Wight.
Hi Brian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised in Colorado, discovered music at age 3. Was desperately devoted to dedicate my life to doing it. Started writing songs and playing all instruments as a kid. Never took lessons. Learned how to record and produce my own music out of necessity because we couldn’t afford a producer or a studio, not that there even were any around in my town of Colorado Springs. After high school, applied to Belmont and Berklee, was accepted into the songwriting program at both but could not afford college. So just moved to Nashville anyway! Lived in my car, was a garbage man, had a million jobs, toured the country playing for nobody. Slowly but surely, more people started hearing my music, and today I am have several albums out, all self written and produced that perfectly capture my soul and self expression. And that in and of itself – is and was the dream!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My family did not come from music and, as much as they loved me, I was definitely a black sheep as far as what I was pouring my life into a young age. My parents understandably were pretty against me omitting college and living in my car as a teenager in a city I had never even visited, to pursue a career in one of the most difficult industries out there. They loved me and had my back, but i definitely didn’t get receive the financial kickstart that many of my peers did. And while I used to have resentment and bitterness about that, I am actually so grateful to them now. It taught me to work hard and be tenacious! Building my career from the ground up, has enabled me to fully appreciate every single step of the way be stoked that I get to do music at all. But all in all, I wouldn’t say a lack of financial aid isn’t a very special “struggle”.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a music artist! I write, produce, play and sing my own songs and make albums and play shows. But I also do that for other artists, AND play whatever instrument for their tours! Grateful to get to do music in a myriad of different ways.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Actually consuming MORE media inhibits me from listening to what’s going on within me. So kind of recommend the opposite!
