Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Deimel.
Hi Frank, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Frank Deimel has been building guitars since his early adolescence and started his professional business in 1998 in Berlin. Giving an unimpeachable tool to a musician but also mirroring his/her unique style is his absolute goal. A »classic« design stays to be a very important point of lead for creation since he and his customers share the same love for the old vintage models. Therefrom Frank Deimel alters his models with modern features to suit nowadays personal and ergonomical likes.
Throughout the last decades he gathered a lot of experience by building solely custom instruments and doing repairs and modifications. As a result of this, 2012 two serial models of Deimel Guitars have be launched that consolidate only best features in two different designs. The »Deimel Doublestar« is a very compact and symmetric guitar with ergonomic features known by F-style guitars, but with the warmth and sustain of a G-style guitar. The »Deimel Firestar« comes in a more expanded design, which provides long string sections beyond bridge and nut, and wide sounding pickups with experimental electronics. Both models are varnished in classic 60ies car colors and contain attractive wood sections.
Since 2007 Frank Deimel work with his partner Kora Jünger.
»Together, our approach of handcrafted, well designed guitars in modern pop culture has fully developed. The inspiration of vintage design cues and experimental, open minded features lead to our main objective: We want to give a tool of great appearance, perfect playability, and inspiring possibilities.
2015 Kora, Frank, the kids, and the workshop moved 40 km further east from Alexanderplatz into the nature reserve area »Naturpark Märkische Schweiz«. Here finally they find plenty of space for their family and a hell lot of new guitars.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course nothing in life is smooth, and honestly, still everyday is an adventure, and that is beautiful.
In hindsight I think, the biggest struggle actually was to think, that everything goes smoothly. It doesn’t, and will never be, because there is no way to delay that trouble is coming everyday (Frank Zappa)!
So actually we encourage any challenges, we love to dive into them. The more we feel challenged, the more we are motivated. It feels very encouraging and satisfying to work this way, and in the end of the day feeling exhausted but happy. I wouldn’t want to change this way of working or living at all.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I and my team are custom guitar builders. We have a pre-designed model option, and from there on you as a customer start to collaborate with us. We enjoy taking your ideas and create something very unique, very customized- we love your input.
We are possibly one of the most collaborative luthiers in the world. Yet no request stopped us from realizing your very individual idea, or desire. We are very proud of having served musicians like Lee Ranaldo from former Sonic Youth, Brice Dessner from The National, or Rich Good from The Psychedelic Furs. And not to forget, Andy Powell from Wishbone Ash!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
The most interesting fact to me is, that actually we build our instruments in a very quite and rural area in an eastern part of Germany, still close to Berlin, but have a very global reach. To act local, but sell global is what we think is what sets us apart too in a way. In the end it is all about a great product. A really great product, which survives by substantial quality and therefore longevity.
