Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeanice McCord.
Hi Jeanice, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a proud Tennessee native, born in Nashville and raised in Shelbyville. A graduate of Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), I am a mother, community advocate, and newly elected Rutherford County School Board Member for Zone 1.
As the mother of a former LaVergne High School student, I understand firsthand the experiences and challenges facing students, educators, and families. She believes strong schools require strong voices—leadership that listens, communicates clearly, supports educators, prioritizes student safety, and ensures public schools are fully funded.
I am committed to serving with integrity, collaboration, and a student-first approach, working to ensure every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running for public office as a Black Democrat in a predominantly white, Republican school-board environment comes with unique challenges—being unknown and a unpredictable candidate, navigating political assumptions, breaking barriers, and working harder to earn trust and respect. Yet these challenges have strengthened my commitment to lead with integrity, build bridges across differences, and keep students, teachers, and families at the center of the work.

But my passion for service has always been greater than the obstacles. As a new school board member, I’m honored to serve students, families, teachers, and the broader community by listening, building bridges, and advocating for opportunities for every child.
My work as a marketing manager for a well known book company has also shaped how I lead. I help independent authors and publishers tell their own stories and share them with the world. That same belief guides my public service: every student and every family deserves to be heard, valued, and given the opportunity to write their own story.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My greatest quality is my ability to listen and connect with people. I lead with empathy, authenticity, and a genuine commitment to serving students, families, and my community.
