Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsey Aucoin.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
9 years ago I moved to Nashville to pursue a career in the beauty industry. I started as a receptionist at a local salon with hopes that I would make the right connections and branch out on my own. In 2019 I began offering mobile spray tanning, hair styling, and makeup. Since then I have been so fortunate to grow into a six figure business all thanks to word of mouth from my clients.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
“Nothing worth having comes easy”
Being self employed is not for the weak. By far the biggest struggle was navigating a new business during COVID. There were no answers as to why, how long, or what’s next and that was terrifying. The first two years were slow, and when my days finally started to fill up with appointments, a whole new set of struggles came with. As the business owner and the artist, the job title doesn’t stop there. In addition to showing up for each appointment, I’m still the receptionist communicating with clients, booking the appointments, stocking up on products, and doing book keeping. It’s exhausting but so rewarding to know that any success is solely from my hard work.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a mobile artist that offers customized spray tans, hairstyles, and makeup applications. Most weekends usually consist of bridal hair and makeup while my week days are filled with spray tans or the occasional photoshoot.
I am so proud of the clientele I’ve built and maintained over the years. Their referrals are the ultimate compliment. I really pride myself of not only showing up at all hours and completing the services to the best of my ability but also educating my clients so they get the best results possible. Many people can apply a spray tan or makeup, but it comes down the preparation and after care details given that makes it a quality service.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I feel like a certain amount of risk taking is so necessary to live a fulfilled life. I don’t want to ever sit back and have a “what if” moment especially when it comes to my career.
I moved to Nashville 9 years ago with no job or career path set. I applied to everything and anything. Quickly found a job, and quickly became complacent with that job always wandering what could be next. The more I thought about it the more I realized that I had hit my ceiling in that position and I wanted more, so I quit. With no plan again, just the dream of doing hair and makeup.
Taking a risk is scary but nothing feels better than finding out it was all worth it and no one else but you made it happen.
