Today we’d like to introduce you to Mya Byrne.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out as a child pretending to play guitar on a tennis racket, when I was in high school I figured out that I liked writing songs and I started doing it. I worked in recording studios in my late teens into my early 20s, and then moved into beautiful full-time songwriter life when I was about 25. And I’ve just been following the roads since then.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been hard, mainly because I seem to be active when the music industry is in dynamic shifts; as a marginalized person sometimes it feels like I’m up against a wall. I have a lot of people who believe in me, though, and I know that this is the world that I belong in.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a full-time singer, songwriter, crackerjack guitarist, and often produce records for other people. I am most proud of staying alive in a world that likes to hurt trans people like me. It’s not easy. I write from my heart and I’m not saying other people don’t, I’m just saying that this is the heart that you’re getting and it’s different than everybody else’s and that’s what sets me apart. I got stories and I hope that they are the kind you like to listen to, and they speak to you, regardless of our divisions.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success by living a good life. Not every day is going to be happy, but true happiness comes from doing what you love, and being able to make ends meet from it. Having a home and a lack of worry is the biggest success I can think of. May that success find all of us who suffer under the twin thumbs of the division of the working class and wage theft.
