Today we’d like to introduce you to Connor Huggins.
Hi Connor, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story in music begins in 7th grade, being forced to join the band program. I was not really active in school or anything else, so my mother pushed me into music and I haven’t looked back. From there I was all in.
Moving into high school, I was in the marching band on the front ensemble for a year and drumline for 3 years. I participated in multiple ensembles including jazz band. My senior year was my first dive into the commercial music industry. I got involved in some different organizations and got to experience some amazing stuff.
I spent 3 years at the University of Memphis Lambuth to earn my bachelor’s degree in music and entertainment. While there I flourished as a musician, playing in our live shows and doing session work. By my second year, I became the pop ensemble’s music director, arranging and aiding in the design of our shows. The amount of trust the faculty put in me is one of the highest honors that I have been able to experience.
While at Lambuth, I really got into audio production. I spent hours in the recording studio learning studio technology and recording practices. I also spent time learning about live event production and live sound reinforcement. I became the studio manager for the campus, managing our recording studio as well as our performance theatre. I spent many hours recording and mixing singles and albums for some of the amazing artists in the program.
Outside of school, I played drums and music directed for multiple artists, including red-dirt artist Bryson Howard and rap artist Artic. I recorded and co-produced an album and several singles for singer-songwriter Rachel Carroll during the summer of 2024 while taking summer classes and performing consistently. In 2025 I had the opportunity to work with Ray “Quasi” Nelson and his Synergy Network as an intern during their summer camp. Additionally, I went on my first tour that summer, going as an audio engineer for the nonprofit group Willy Pete which played shows on military bases in Germany.
Currently, I am working on my masters degree at Middle Tennessee State University, studying recording arts and technology. I have gained so much knowledge and have been afforded numerous opportunities, including working on a broadcast truck at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. Through this program, I have been able to work on some amazing projects that will be released to the world soon. As of today, I continue my education while also continue to work with artists both in the studio and live.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been the easiest road of course. Most nights consist of me going to sleep very late due to things I am working on. Whether it is something for an artist or working on an assignment, it is a lot to manage. Combine that with consistent travel and it is a lot of going and doing. However, I love the work and it brings me a lot of joy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work and skills vary a lot. One of the main things I specialize in is live concert playback systems. These systems are fundamental in the way a lot of concerts run in today’s entertainment industry. I take this set of skills along with my knowledge of audio and live sound production to help artists from a technical standpoint with their show. My previous experience as a music director also allows me to have input on the creative design and aspects of a show. Whether it is creative, technical, or both, I bring a wealth of knowledge and creativity to help an artist achieve their dream show.
In the studio, I have experience in recording, mixing, and mastering. I love the whole process and love bringing a song to life. As a producer, I really enjoy talking to artists about what their dream for a song is and bringing in the right people for it. Having worked in several different genres has given me insight into production methods for different styles of music. I love working with new artists and building a catalog of music they love.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Over the last 2 years I have really developed a love for college football. If I am not working out in the field, I love watching a great slate of Saturday games. Most of the time, they are on in the background as I work, but every once in a while I get to sit and watch every snap of the game. It has been something that I not only enjoy, but something to look at that is not a creative art. I hope to get to attend a game soon.
