Hidden Gems: Meet Garrett Peveler of Co-Owner of “Brand-U Athletics” and Creative Director “Alchemy Lifting Club”

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garrett Peveler.

Hi Garrett, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started like most kids with the app “IMovie”. Me and my siblings would film every time we went to my grandparents most weekends. I then got into stop motion with my legos throughout middle school(All of this just for fun of course). Once I got to Independence high school I enrolled in a film class, and immediately fell in love with film. We dissected movies, learned to edit, and created short films of every genre. Through out my time there I played football, and the schedule took time away from being able to film sports. However, I was able to edit the footage my classmates would take every Friday and that became where I fell in love. The editing process was so amusing to me. The fact that you could make the footage whatever you wanted it to be-the final creative direction was given to you, and that was so meaningful to me. I created my reel for a few award shows that my film teacher Matt Balzer entered us into my senior year. I sent in ours schools news(I was the producer), My VFX reel, and my editing reel. I ended up taking home a nomination for best VFX in the mid-south region under the NATAS Student production awards, as well as a win for Best editor in the Mid-south region, where I ended up placing top seven on the national level for that award as well. I also won media student of the year in my county, among a few other county awards. I was so thankful and realized that I had a talent for it. I later ended up committing to college for football, however, along the way through-I looked into the loans, and realized that I was sacrificing my passion in film for a fun 4 years. So I de-commited and took the gamble on myself on film. I began to freelance, and it has opened up so many doors for me. I have met so many people and filmed so many events. The camera has truly brought me places that I never would have unlocked myself. I have filmed the likes of olympian skaters, concerts, Live events, Engagments, weddings, and sports of all kinds. I have truly been blessed to thrive in this arena where every gig is a new door open. I’ve learned that film is a job where you never get bored, and you will always learn something new in every gig.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Wasn’t the smoothest start. Thankfully I had a few connections of former coaches, film friends, and people in the industry that I could always reach out to for advice. I have learned that keeping your mouth shut keeps you from so much. Me being an extrovert with a social battery. I tend to get a little quiet during some film events, but I have truly learned the saying, “closed mouths don’t get fed”. By not introducing myself or even just saying, “hi” to the people around me I missed out on so many opportunities. The film industry is so much word of mouth which I hadn’t realized before. Now, I try to always have a smile on my face and never stop taking that gamble of reaching out to people and introducing myself. Because, that one person you say hi to may know a hundred other people that could use your talents.

We’ve been impressed with Co-Owner of “Brand-U Athletics” and Creative Director “Alchemy Lifting Club”, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started as a freelance, which I still do where I take any and all gigs that appeal to my eye. However, my good friend William Hernandez reached out to me to help start Brand-U Athletics. I have found such a strong passion for this company as someone who has had such a strong passion for both sports and film. We partner with local schools in our area and aid with sponsorships within team vids and recaps. We realize that companies don’t get a ton of recognition from just putting a banner up in a stadium, so we started a way to incorporate their sponsorships into the teams social media. We both have such a passion and want to see the school succeed as we do the sponsors, and in the end-if we get more eyes on the athletes then we did our job.

I also aid my longtime friend Cole Laster as the creative director for “Alchemy Lifting Club”. We specialize in gym clothing that conveys the message “Ordinary to Extraordinary”. We’ve been able to sign many athletes and get to showcase their story and the community behind the curtains of bodybuilding and produced some pretty cool clothes with it.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The art of humility and always being willing to learn from anyone and everyone around you. Because this is a creative industry-the way you are wired can be totally opposite from someone else-which is the beauty of it. Seeing someone polar opposite and being able to conjoin and create something for a whole new audience that you never would’ve imagined reaching alone. And no matter the stage anyone is at in their career-I can still look at their creation and pull something away from it.
