Today we’d like to introduce you to Starr Adara.
Hi Starr, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a small town in southern Missouri, in a very religious household alongside my 7 younger siblings. Ever since I can remember, I have felt a strong pull towards anything creative/artsy. I spent my most formative years experimenting with various art forms and mediums including drawing, fashion design, photography and writing music. I have always been in love with the process of creating something out of nothing and using art as a way to make sense of the world around me.
Being raised in a strict, religious household with a big family, meant that there was consistent chaos and dysfunction. There was a lot of emotional neglect and hostility that caused me to feel constantly overwhelmed and anxious. It wasn’t all bad of course….I have really good memories too and I love my family dearly. I want that to be known. But it’s also true that the way that I grew up greatly impacted me in a negative way. I experienced things that no child should ever have to endure or feel responsible for. Clinging to my art (especially my music) was a means necessary for my emotional survival. Music felt like a guiding light through my darkest moments. It felt like something I could actually put my faith in.
It was May of 2013 that I wrote my first song at 12 years old. I didn’t know how to write a song. I barely knew how to play piano and yet…the words and chords just poured out. It came to me so naturally and in a way that felt undeniable. I had always heard about other people finding their purpose and had listened to testimonies at church of people finding meaning in their lives ….and I felt that this was that thing for me. I knew without any doubt in my mind that music was my calling. It means everything to me.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I believe that being a true artist requires total honesty and vulnerability. You can’t make art that moves people if you’re unwilling to feel your own feelings.
Music is my therapy. Whenever I write and release a song into the world, there’s no going back. It’s no longer mine to carry – and while that is extremely relieving and healing, it can also be really triggering at times. My deepest, darkest secrets being accessible to anyone to dissect, critique and perceive can feel really uncomfortable. It feels like a stranger reading your diary. However, It has always felt worth it to me. There’s something really freeing about radically accepting the dark parts of your life and giving those heavy emotions of sadness, anger, fear, insecurity, grief etc. a new place, outside of yourself to reside. If you don’t channel it, it consumes you.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I sing, write and produce alternative rock music. I write about my personal experiences and love exploring the taboo. I’m the kind of artist that isn’t afraid to talk about the hard things. In fact, I think it’s super necessary and needed. My audience looks to my music for understanding and processing of their own experiences. I am most proud of that. I feel that it’s my most sacred responsibility to put things into words that others feel they can’t. That’s what my favorite artists have done for me and I just want to pay it forward.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am very protective of my artistry and personal life and so I try to be very discerning with people that I collaborate with. You can never be too careful in an industry like this. With that being said, I am always looking to connect with like minded people. People that are committed to growth and being in touch with their most authentic self. I think especially in this era of the internet and AI – genuine human connection and collaboration is now more important than ever. I only want to be surrounded by those that value empathy and love above all else.
