Rising Stars: Meet Kat Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Robinson.

Hi Kat, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My passion for photography began as a young child, as my father and grandfather were very talented hobbyist themselves. I grew up sifting through baskets of photos my dad had taken. At a time when photography required a strong commitment to the craft.
I have pursued the art through dark room courses, courses at MTSU and photojournalism at WKU. I miss everything about the darkroom. It’s very nostalgic and has a sense of magic.

I remember one of my first shoots with my friend and the incredible Regina King (Renfro). While we were reviewing her images, she punched me in the arm, exclaiming, “You made me hot!” I responded, “Sweet girl, I’m just showing you what I see.”

Throughout the years, photography has opened some very cool doors, from shooting at BNA, to shooting with the beloved and local legend, “Santa” of Santa’s Pub, to shooting and staying in a French castle last year! I’ve also become a proud brand partner with Indigo productions for marketing shoots. I greatly value the relationships I’ve built with my clients and those that are incredibly talented in this industry.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every journey will have ebbs and flows. My dad always said, “Life is a grand adventure, but not one for the weak of heart.” Losing him this Easter to Parkinson’s was the hardest time. Among so many beautiful things he gave me, love of photography is something we always shared, so continuing to create art through photography that would make him proud encourages and inspires me.

I think many artists, no matter the level of success we experience, can be very critical of ourselves. It takes endurance, dedication and passion to persevere. Even Oprah got fired, Adele still gets stage fright. I believe that your mindset is critical to growth and to understand that you have something beautiful to contribute to those you love and your community.

Any craft requires investment of time and money, and the discernment to know which projects, education and relationships are a good fit for my life and goals. If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My photography portfolio has years of work in shooting sweet memories for families, female portraiture, and headshots. It was the want to help women recognize the beauty that exists within them, that inspired me in the beginning. I remember my first shoot with the incredible Regina King (Renfro). While we were reviewing her images from the day, she exclaimed, “You made me HOT!”, while punching me in the arm. I responded, “Sweet girl, I’m just showing you what I see.” That’s when I knew this was for me.

I’m currently focused on brand photography, lifestyle and fashion. My work is rooted in strong visual storytelling, thoughtful composition, and a deep understanding of how photography can help shape and elevate a brand.

I’m proud of my publications in Maxim and Rebel Ink. Maxim for Santa’s for top 50 dive bars. I get this epic phone call from Santa. “This is Denzel. Maxima magazine needs some pictures. I need you to come down here.” The fact that he wasn’t familiar with Maxim speaks volumes to the gentleman he was. Having the black and white still scroll on the karaoke prompter always makes me feel like family.

The tattoo stand image I created, built the stand, because as much as people judge two parents that are fully tatted, those well adjusted kids are home making pancakes! It went viral, so publishing it was my way of claiming it.

It makes me proud to work with the community and teach the next generation about the craft. I loved volunteering with Autism Speaks and enjoying seeing the children engaged with photography.

One of the things I bring to a production is a calm and collaborative approach. I believe the best images come from creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable contributing creatively, while still keeping the shoot organized, and focused on the end goal.

I’m very involved throughout the creative process, from developing the initial concept and planning the shoot to directing on set and overseeing the final retouching. I’m passionate about the details and about making sure the final images not only look beautiful, but communicate something meaningful about the brand or client.
