Today we’d like to introduce you to Kortney Wilson.
Kortney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I moved to Nashville from Canada 23 years to pursue music. After a full career that led me to be signed to Disney’s country label, Lyric Street, and then Sony Records I follow my heart and love of music for many years. I had a brief stint on ABC’s One Life To Live and had so many experiences that to this day, I’m super grateful for. Even after marrying and having my first two children, CMT followed my husband and me as we pursued music in a series called, Meet The Wilson’s. It was chock-full of amazing times and glorified home movies. As with everything, the seasons of life change and we started flipping houses in Nashville to support our dreams of music. Over time, our life’s goals changed and we shifted more into real estate. With a little less music and a little more flipping, I decided to get my real estate license and see what I was made of. I quickly realized that with my background in marketing (myself that is – because that’s what entertainers are born to do), I was able to spin that into marketing houses for my friends and clients. It was unexpected but I ran with it with a desire to bring my design expertise from flipping and my energy from the entertainment business and turn that into maximizing the profits when selling for my clients and being a home visionary to my buyers.
Within a year of becoming a Realtor, HGTV had coincidentally offered us a show where they would follow our house flipping business. After four seasons, we shifted to a show where I am now helping other people renovate their own homes. I’m still; a Realtor first and take pride in my team being attentive and in tune but it’s been nice to film in both Nashville and Toronto, Canada as I help homeowner’s dreams for their family homes come to fruition.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think growing up a dreamer has allowed me some amazing experiences but it was hard to let go of music initially to pursue a career in real estate. I felt at the beginning that I was selling out. I quickly realized that I loved being a Realtor. I love being in the mix with people. I love guiding the process and I love home design. It was a healing process for me to see my dreams evolve for sure and there were many tears along the way but I think nearly everyone I know in Nashville has a story of their dreams evolving. I am just one of them and I’m proud to have overcome the struggles. I’m proud of what I accomplished as a singer and entertainer and now TV host but I’m mostly proud that I have been able to support my family and be the best mom that I can be.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Kortney Wilson Group?
I have so enjoyed having a small team. Branding is important to any business and so we have tried to take that to the next level. Being at the forefront of photography, videography, and ensuring that our client’s properties are presented in the best light, has been key. We are honest and transparent. We are not afraid to tell you the truth because our end goal has always been to maximize one’s investment. It’s okay to say, Hey, I know you love that chair and it’s been in your family for years because I can see the dent where everyone sat, but let’s put that in storage and replace it with modern furniture. And hey, by presenting this room in a better light, you are going to make back every cent and them some.” That’s the truth and sometimes it’s hard but we can relate and we try and do everything with an acknowledgment that we understand how hard this process can be. We also love using humor. If we can’t laugh during this process, we may cry. There are late nights and lots of weekends where we are burning the candle so it’s important for all of us to not take ourselves too seriously. We love that for negotiations 🙂
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was really shy as a little kid. So shy that my mom put me in dance class so I could let go of her legs and open up to people. She would say that the rest is history. As an adult, I am outgoing and I’m not sure that I’ve ever met a stranger. I think every person I interact with has something to teach me and I embrace those moments. I love watching a good movie and I’ve started to make time for a good book here and then but mostly, I adore spending every waking minute with my kids. Whether it’s swinging in the bucket chairs at the lakehouse or learning to “TIK TOK” dance with my daughter (Um, I’m not very good, but I try), I’m game for anything.
I spend most of my money on linens and traveling – ha. I don’t care much about expensive cars or handbags but I’m a sucker for some luxurious sheets and a trip around the sun.
