Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Vejar.
Hi Michelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a child of the 70’s, I loved playing dress up in my mom’s closet. I fell in love with the 70’s Bohemian vibe and loved how clothes made me feel. Playing dress up in my mom’s closet is where my passion for clothes began. I followed a few other passions before starting my own business. I was a flight attendant with a private charter airline. I traveled all over the world and fell in love with different cultures. After 9/11, I made a career change and landed in the advertising industry. I worked for several luxury travel magazines and websites. In 2015, I lost my Mom, best friend and cheerleader Shirley. That changed trajectory of my life that loss changed everything for me. With nothing left to lose, I packed up my car and two dogs and moved from Ft Lauderdale to Nashville. I had only been to Nashville on two weekend getaways, but I felt like this was the place I belonged (I was right). After moving to Nashville and being inspired by the local vibrant music scene and the people I met that were fearlessly following their own dreams. I decided to follow my lifelong passion in late 2018 and launch Rock-n-Boho Clothing. In 2020, I purchased turquoise blue school bus I could take Rock-n-Boho on the road. I named the bus after my Mom Shirley and her signature is right next to the front door riding shotgun.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has had many obstacles. I bought the bus right before the world shut down due to covid. All of the events I had planned for the year were canceled. I was doing pop ups in people’s driveways, partnering with other small businesses and the Music City Food Truck park was able to re-open before other events because they have such a large space people could socially distance. In June of 2021 on my way home from a Bluegrass festival the bus broke down an hour outside of Nashville. My friends started a GoFundMe page to help raise money to buy a new engine for the bus. Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rock-n-Boho Clothing?
I curate clothing, accessories and home goods that are inspired by rock-n-roll and a bohemian mindset/lifestyle. I work with many local and national designers as well as larger more well-known fashion brands. My brand is unique not only because of the style of the clothing I curate but I also operate my business out of a vintage turquoise blue school bus. I am really proud that I am able to work with local clothing, jewelry and sunglass designers. This allows me to offer my clients one of a kind pieces and I am helping promote/support small businesses that I admire. I have been lucky to dress a number of well know musicians from members of Gene Simmons Band to incredible Nashville artists like the Untamed, Them Vibes, Coco and The Nash Bash and Erin McLendon. All of my models are friends and clients these are real women from ages 30-50 with real bodies. Rock-n-Boho was voted best mobile boutique in TN by the Boutique Hub (2020) The Rock-n-Boho bus can be found at many events and markets around the city and monthly at the Graduate hotel. You can find the schedule on the website rocknbohoclothing.com under “Shop the bus”. The bus can also be booked from private events such as bachelorette parties, Girls night out, Charity events or corporate events. We can also provide a hair and makeup team for a full makeover experience.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I had a few undiagnosed learning issues so I was always a bit lost in school but I was very social. I learned at a very young age that if I could make people laugh and feel good then my learning issues would not be the focus. I loved roller skating, soccer and playing in my mom’s closet.
