Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Tolbert.
Hi Margaret, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always been a leader and entertainer. While working for the local newspaper in the advertising department, I needed a creative outlet and started my own wedding planning business, Details by Margaret in 2007. At first, it was a hobby and way to be creative but word got out and Details by Margaret is now a full-service event planning company. In the beginning, it was just me with a little help from mom when she would come to town. Slowly the team began to grow and now we have a team of ten ladies working to create magical weddings and events for local couples.
We often did weddings at Historic Travellers Rest and in 2018, we had the opportunity to exclusively partner with the venue and now Details by Margaret is based out of this beautiful historic wedding venue. Our weddings are lead my lead planner, Mary Jo Weaver. From logistics to execution, Mary Jo is my right-hand gal and true person behind the brand.
As the wedding planning business grew, so did my corporate and marketing side. With the help of a local mentor and some local businesses, I left the newspaper and started Tolbert Marketing and Events. I needed work/life balance. Ha! I know, owning your own business means more stress…. but in a different way. I am able to spend time with my son and husband. I control my day and my stress.
TME offers everything from website design, social media management to events. We are all things local marketing. Again, started the business alone and now have built an amazing team that brings it all together. It is with the team that I am able to grow, share my passion but still have time for my family. I am happy educating people on how marketing works and watching their business thrive. My passion shines bright when I am speaking to a group.
I am all about women empowering women. Both of my businesses are run by women and I am so proud to have built something I can put my name on. I love being in control of my happiness and spreading the joy to others!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have been so blessed with amazing clients and teammates. Yes, building a business is hard, but when the opportunity knocks, I open the door! I went out on my own so I could control my schedule and have more time for my family.
When my son was about three he said, “mommy, why do you always use your mad voice.” This broke my heart. I didn’t even realize how the stress from working a corporate job was coming home with me.
I probably work more now BUT I control when and how I do my job. If my son wants me to take a break to hear the new song he learned on the guitar, I am able to stop and make time for him. I am involved with his school and now he knows that HE is my priority. I have also shown him what it is like to truly love your job!
