Today we’d like to introduce you to Avery Cash.
Hi Avery, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started out by just taking cell phone photos at family functions and outings. Mostly candid because they seemed to be the best when people don’t expect them. I kept doing this over the years and steadily did more and more of these candid like photos, at times street photography is what I enjoyed most! As I got better and updated my cameras and lenses, I kept my love for candids and took them more often during weddings and events, and even started taking them during portrait sessions. Just like back when I was taking these funny candids on my cell phone, these that I take on my cameras convey real emotion. A true, non-forced smile or laugh tears as a groom sees his bride walking down the aisle, the look in the eyes during the first dance. These photos help me to tell my story through photos more and has really helped me along the way!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road, but it hasn’t. I started doing photography as my associate’s and bachelor’s degrees are in graphic design. I’ve had a pretty big learning curve to overcome. A lot of what I do know has been self-taught through trial and error, especially through my earlier years. As I’ve grown, I’ve learned more from peers, mentors, and other photographers in social media groups and on YouTube. Of course, there’s also the struggle of being up at 2 am some nights editing photos, but there’s beauty in that. I enjoy it, so I’m happy to lose some sleep over a session that I’m excited about!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a wedding and portrait photographer! I believe I specialize in the candid photos that I take between the posed photos that my clients don’t know I take. Those candids, especially during events and weddings, are what I believe that I’m known for. I’m most proud of the way that I can think on the spot and use the environment, angles, and things around me to help to alter or better the photos I take. The same pose can look very different by two different photographers.
I think my personality and relatability to my clients really sets me apart from others! I have a huge family, with members in every age range. That helps me to be able to converse with adults and kids to make the photo session very light-hearted. During all of my photo sessions, I will laugh because I want us all to be comfortable and have a great time!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
1. Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fuji, etc. Your camera brand and lens selection doesn’t matter. Go with what feels the most comfortable in your hand.
2. Take photos. Everyday. Of everything. Practice on your friends, family members, neighbors, pets, landscapes, parks, everything you can. It will only make you better!.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and for constructive criticism. There’s hundreds of social media groups and YouTube channels that will teach you the ins and outs of your camera, posing, techniques, lighting, etc.! Get lost in the photos and try out the thing they teach!
The biggest thing I wish I knew when starting out was this… Not everyone is your ideal client, it’s okay to turn down jobs.

I’ve been blessed to be photographed by this gifted Photographer on several occasions. Saving one picture for my book’s jacket cover…
