Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia Johnson.
Hi Sylvia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The concept of developing and investing in real estate has always intrigued me. As a child, I would often hear my mother say, “God isn’t making any more land. Be sure to get you a piece of it.” However, like most adults, life happened and homeownership was slightly out of reach. I was saddled with debt and student loans. But I was determined to own my piece of the American dream. So, I spent my thirties paying off the debt I acquired in my twenties.
I worked two jobs for three years to pay off debt and put myself in a position to buy a home. The moment when your hard work pays off is an amazing thing but unfortunately for me, the real estate agent I had chosen did not have my best interest in mind and was completely underhanded. My experience as a first-time homebuyer was shattered and forever tainted. It was an eye-opening experience.
At that point, I was determined to get my real estate license to help buyers and sellers navigate the market with full transparency and give them a better experience then I had.
My home buying experience or lack thereof pushes me every day to help educate my clients. I always hear people say that I am “the realtor girl who educates and is brutally honest.” It’s something that makes me smile but also reminds me that I have a duty to my clients to always be in their corner no matter what.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to entrepreneurship is never smooth and always presents different challenges and struggles. When I decided to step into being a real estate agent full time, I had to re-organize and re-prioritize my life. There is definitely no road map when it comes to finding the perfect balance between providing my clients with superior customer service while also being the best wife and mother, I can be to my two daughters who are both under two years old.
If I must name one challenge, balancing motherhood and career would be it. It is something I work at every day. I struggle with “Mom Guilt” like most other mothers. But I am very fortunate to have a village around me that helps me to succeed. Working and building a legacy takes time away from the time I get to spend with my daughters, but I constantly remind myself that everything I am doing, the hard work and all the tears is for them. I strive to make them proud and inspire other mothers by showing them anything is possible.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Navigating real estate can be tough and finding the right real estate agent to help along that journey can be even tougher. That is why I consider myself the H.O.M.E agent of choice, providing my clients with: Honesty, Organization, Mindfulness and Experience.
I am an East Nashville native, wife and mother of two. I am also an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc and REALTOR. My real estate acumen is indispensable when buying or selling in Nashville’s ever-changing market. I believe buying or selling a home is more than just a transaction, it is a way to build wealth. It is this belief that has led me to become a REALTOR and to help my clients do just that.
It is said that buying a home is the largest purchase most people will ever make in their lifetime. As a REALTOR, I do not take that lightly. That is why I take the time to thoroughly educate my clients before we begin shopping for their homes. I make sure my clients are able to make well-informed, educated decisions. Also when helping my clients sell their homes, I bring to the table an in-depth amount of resources to make sure they not only get top dollar for their home but that the selling process is seamless and stress-free.
My brand will always be one that is transparent, educational and honest. I am loyal to my clients looking to buy, sell, invest or relocate to the Middle Tennessee area. I work with all price points.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people who know me or my brand don’t know that as a child, me and my family lived in a condemned house in North Nashville. There were many times we didn’t have running water or had to eat at the homeless shelter up the street. It’s never been anything I was ever ashamed of. My parents were doing the best they could. Oddly enough, some of my best childhood memories came from living in that house. From the slanted floors to caved in ceilings, as a child it was always an adventure. That upbringing helped groom me into the woman I am today, forever grateful, and thankful for all that I have. The house still barely stands in North Nashville and is still condemned. One of my main real estate goals is to purchase and renovate the home. It would be the perfect example of, “it doesn’t matter where you start, all that matters is where you’re going.”
