Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Dennis.
Hi Madison, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been interested in makeup and hairstyling for events my entire life, but it’s never something I thought I could make a career out of until around 2014. I grew up competing in pageants and talent competitions and participating in local theater, so I had to learn how to do my own hair & makeup for performances. Eventually, I began getting requests from others for their weddings and events, and it just evolved from there. I quit my corporate job in the entertainment industry in January of 2015 to become a full-time hair & makeup stylist and I’ve been going nonstop ever since!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been entirely smooth, more so with growing pains than anything. When I first started full time, I had a ton of pageant gigs and weddings lined up that year so I had some pretty solid stability from the beginning. As I began taking on more work and growing my team, especially for weddings, there were more challenges, but it definitely helped me to identify how I like to work best. Now, I have a solid wedding team of artists, and then I do all of the non-wedding services in my studio and on location myself, and that has been a great balance for me and my career.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in beauty makeup and hair. With that, I find myself doing many weddings, pageants, and special events such as balls and formals. I also do a lot of photo and video shoots that require a beautiful enhancement of the client’s look, including senior photos, headshots, boudoir shoots, and some music artists. My work has often been described as “natural glam” – not entirely transforming the client into someone they don’t recognize, but allowing their own natural beauty to shine through my work on them. My makeup and hairstyles also last for many, many hours, which is great for weddings & pageants. I have a very keen eye for detail, and I think that is what sets my work apart from the rest. I don’t just “slap it on” – I really take the time to evaluate my client’s facial features and select the right shades, tones, lashes, etc., to promote that.
How do you define success?
For me, success has always been about being able to have flexibility in my career. If I am generating enough income to sustain a full-time living doing what I love, that is a success to me.
