Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Groom.
Hi Sydney, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I moved to Brentwood in mid-May to finish out my practicum for my master’s degree at the University of Florida for my degree in tourism and recreational management with Rob Hatch at Pump House Records. Currently, I run social media accounts, pursue creative avenues to market our label and most importantly our artists (Nick Norman & Rebecca Lynn Howard), and am constantly searching for new talent.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been very fortunate to see a smooth transition as I moved from Florida, running my own social media and marketing company to Nashville. However, one of the most unique parts of my journey here has been working from home whether that be in personal studios or on the back porch. I am one of few in the music industry who has only been to Music Row a handful of times.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My primary role for the label is running social accounts and analyzing data. Perhaps one of my largest accomplishments in this area of my job was turning one of our personal accounts around in less than a week, receiving over 3000% increase in engagement. What sets me apart from others in the same field is my age. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree before turning 19 was quite an accomplishment and gave me the opportunity to continue pursuing my education.
Currently, I have a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Communications and Leadership Development which allows me to further communicate the sciences and break down harder concepts for the general public to better understand. I like to refer to my degree as the “translation degree” all kinds of people can communicate, but it takes a special few of us to translate lingo that is specific to an industry for the common person to understand. My graduate program is in Tourism and Recreational Management which is giving me the opportunity to pursue my dreams and work in the music industry all before the age of 21. Being so young, I’ve never known life without social media accounts. Therefore what most industry professionals have to take the time to learn it’s just second nature to me.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
One of the major lessons that the COVID-19 crisis has taught me has been that I can be anywhere in the world and still do my job. I have been fortunate to join the industry at a time where the average business model is being reconstructed to better fit the lives of its employees. I’m very excited to see where the average 9-to-5 will fit in this post-Covid world.
