Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Smalling.
Hi Jordyn, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I fell in love with the creative process growing up in a dance studio. My fascination with art and photography grew out of that love for dance when I was in college and I began to experiment with cameras and painting. I started refining these crafts by studying and majoring in fine art at the University of Tennessee while also building a lifestyle portfolio of work outside of school with families and weddings. I believe today my work is a hybrid style of what I gained through those years in college with artistic discipline and commercial lifestyle experience. I’m grateful for
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I see my journey with photography thus far as both smooth and a struggle. I came into this career with ease and it felt and still feels like a natural extension of personal passions and giftings for me. I struggle, and always have, with the business side of my artwork. I love to be with people, hear stories, and document their season of life– how to market myself, price my work, and churn the logistical engine of my business daily doesn’t come as easy to me. I am in constant pursuit of balance with what it means for me to run a business and create art with dear clients.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In the photographic experience with me, I believe I’m most known for the energy and comfortability I bring into a session or a day of documenting. I connect deeply with clients and storylines and I think that emotion translates in my images. I think I’m also known for my work ethic and how I’ll go the extra mile in relationships with my clients so I can capture the essence of who people truly are.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love working on teams of shooters during wedding days or partnering with brands and small businesses to create media campaigns.
