Today we’d like to introduce you to Kernisha Chaney.
Hi Kernisha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In the summer of 2016, I was headed into my junior year of undergrad. I was working retail, but I wasn’t making a lot of money. I started brainstorming how I could make good money while having fun doing so. I am multitalented, and I love to create art, so I landed on creating wooden decor. From there, I chose the name “Wooden Letters By Nisha” and started a business!
Here I am, summer 2021, and I am rebranding! In the fall of this year, I will present an online store named “Thirty 0 One.” The inspiration behind this name comes from my own and my late aunt, Deborah Ann Goodwin’s, birthday. My birthday is November 30th, and my aunts’ is December 1st. She was my BFF, and we were creatives together! So I am excited to create this rebrand to represent us and the work that I know we would have been creating together. So follow @woodenlettersbynisha on Facebook and Instagram for my rebrand updates!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Creating/running a business has not been a smooth road. I was working on my bachelor’s degree when I started it, and I am currently working on my doctorate in counseling psychology. So with being in school and most of my finances going towards school and living, I have not always been able to put as much time, energy, and money into building the business as I’d like. Running a business also makes a difference when you have the materials that you need. I am at the point where I have the resources/materials that I need, and I can make more time to focus on my brand. Don’t Give Up!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love to create items that are different from what others are doing.
I am known for being presented with an idea from a client and transforming it into more than they envisioned.
I am most proud of the progress that I have made with my business within the last five years. It would’ve been easy to give up, but I am glad that I didn’t. The ideas that I’ve had for a long time now will be presented through “Thirty 0 One.”
I will always create/present items that have my own flair to them.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like most about the city is the quick access to many resources. It is also easy to network with like-minded individuals and businesses in the city. For example, I collaborated with the Miller sisters who own “The Mill Boutique” in Green Hills. I created fun spring-themed masks to be sold in their store. It was great exposure for “Wooden Letters By Nisha,” and their customers stayed safe in style!
