Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Vanessa.
Hi Sabrina, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was five years old when I watched my first musical theatre show and I knew right after I needed to be on that stage. When I was six, my parents enrolled me in musical theatre classes that I did until the age of 13. In high school, I was in an arts program specializing in drama. I always knew I wanted to be a singer and be on stage, so when I turned 16, I made the decision to start going after my dreams. Fast forward to present day; I’m 21 and have released four country songs to date, with many more to come. I’m so excited to be on this journey and can’t wait to start performing shows again!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
This is an interesting question… When I was 16, I started off writing and releasing pop music. I felt like because it’s a more popular genre, it would make my music more popular. This is far from the truth. After graduating high school, I dealt with some personal struggles and it really had to make me question who am I, what do I want and what am I doing? I realized that I’ve always loved country music and the community and music is just so much more me. I wouldn’t have it any other way, I found my place and home in country music and I hope people who listen to my songs can hear that.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
By day I work in an office at a construction company; by night, I’m Sabrina Vanessa – an artist trying to find her way in the industry. I guess you could say I’m known for just being me, authentically and genuinely me. I would never change who I am just so others can like me or like my music. You either like who I am and what I do or you don’t, and that’s okay! I will always be myself because that’s who God made me to be and he makes no mistakes!
I would say I’m most proud of my journey to get to where I am today. For a long period of time, I thought I could never pursue music… that I would graduate high school and immediately go off to law school, come home with a degree and go work a standard 9 – 5. Not only that, but I never truly believed in myself; I never thought I was good enough. Sure, I still have days where I think that but what I tell myself is no one has my voice; it is uniquely mine, and my dream is to be on stage singing for thousands so why not take a leap and chase that dream? It took me a long time to work up the courage to actually take that leap and here I am!
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I’m from Toronto and the culture is crazy here. It’s so diverse and there’s so many different talents brought to the table, and not only musically. It’s just so fun living here because there is always something new and exciting going on! There’s nothing I really dislike about Toronto, maybe just all the construction that never ends haha!!
