Today we’d like to introduce you to Lynda and Tim Mosley.
Hi Lynda & Tim, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The Fabric House opened its door in the H. G. Hill Center in Green Hills in 1967. We were located there for 37 years in a 5,300 sq. ft. store. We sold drapery and upholstery fabrics, drapery hardware and trim. In 2004, we had to move since the shopping center was being torn down. We moved to 4308 Sidco Dr. It turned out to be a great move because we are conveniently located close to the interstate. We have lots of Alabama and Kentucky customers in addition to our Tennessee customers, so being close to the interstate (instead of dealing with Green Hills traffic) has been great. Also we expanded the store to 13,000 square feet. That increase in size allowed us to greatly expand our fabric, trim, and hardware selection in addition to adding lamps and accessories. We now also carry lots of styles of ready-made panels.
There are thousands of fabric and trim samples you can order in addition to the ones in stock. Our custom drapery, bedding, and pillow sales have increased with the added space.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was definitely not a smooth road when we found out that the HG Hill shopping center which we were located in was going to be torn down. We only had a year to move the store to a new location. Business was slow that first year, so we wondered if we should have closed or moved.
We’ve been impressed with The Fabric House, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
There are two things I can think of that we are especially proud of. 1. Our customer service is outstanding. You no longer have customer service in department stores or chain stores. We often spend an hour with a customer just helping them select fabric and trim for a pillow. We do get very busy at times, and customers sometimes have to wait, but when we get to them, they will get a lot of attention and help.
2. We have been told by several of our fabric reps that we have the nicest fabric store in the country. The fabrics and trims are laid out by color which makes it easier for customers to find what they like.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Amazon has definitely hurt many brick-and-mortar stores, but I feel our fabric industry will stay strong because customers will always want to see and touch fabrics and trims in person. Since our prices are very competitive, and many of our customers want to shop local, we hope to be in business for many years.
