Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Valley.
Hi Alex, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m new to Nashville as of a year ago when I decided to buy a house on a whim and move my life here. It has been a great decision so far! Originally, I am from Hazen, North Dakota. After selling a previous business, I city hopped in the US before eventually landing in Los Angeles. While in LA, I started UNITY after experiencing the amazing benefits of CBD for myself. I wanted to bring something fun and effective to the market- so we did just that. Fast forward a few years and we are one of the largest CBD consumables companies in the US!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has been a constant struggle! From the different legislation (or lack thereof) in the industry, the supply chain issues of a new industry (only being more strained from COVID), to the standard challenges of starting something new. It has not been easy in the slightest. You have to really love what you do to dive into entrepreneurship. While it looks great on Instagram, it is usually so much less appealing when you are in the thick of it. I’m lucky to be where I am now, but it hasn’t always been smooth!
We’ve been impressed with Unity Wellness Co, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
UNITY has the number one CBD beverage and protein bar on the market right now. We are known for having ingredients that are hard to say (Ashwa–what?) and hardworking! We pride ourselves on being the most effective and best-tasting beverage on the market. We are in over 1,000 stores across the US. Some of my favorites in Nashville are The Turnip Truck, The Goat SoBro, Anzie Blue, Kwench, and Tower Market! We love the local support and hope that you say hello if you see any of us wearing clothing with a big red U on it!
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is relative. I correlate my success with my freedom. Am I free to not work on a Tuesday if I don’t want to? Am I free to buy the things that I need without having to worry? Am I free to make decisions for myself? People focus too much on money. While I admit that money is very important, I think freedom is more important. Often they go hand-in-hand, but not always. For example, there is probably somebody making three times what you make right now in Manhattan who has to work twice the amount of hours and is able to save less. Success is freedom.
