Exploring Life & Business with Elizabeth Moore and Ashley Brooke James of TRILUNA Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Moore and Ashley Brooke James. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Co-founders, Elizabeth and Ashley, started their company after 10 years each in high-pressure sales & marketing roles. Each found their way to wellness recovering from debilitating stress and burnout but struggled to find a space that was accessible, realistic, and inclusive. So they created it.

They started their company in 2018 as a way to bring enjoyment back to the wellness space. As co-founders, they both looked around and saw very little representation of realistic wellness. They wanted to create a space where you could show up exactly as you are, build your community, and gain tools for deeper self-care. What they found was a lot of shaming, unsustainable practices, and diets.

So together they put the best of their knowledge and experience and created workshops that are accessible to all levels and that are actually fun. Together they took workshops like Downdog to Donuts, Cozy Yoga & Pumpkin Spice, and Meditation For Stress Management all over the city and eventually all over the country as the world navigated more online during 2020.

After practicing their workshops many times they honed in on what worked, removed what didn’t, and we’re left with the best of the best. As a company, they have taken those workshops and turned them into workbooks and couched those workbooks in adorable boxes that make gifts that are not only a delight to unwrap but that has the power to transform your perspective.

Today, we’re proud to say that TRILUNA is a local leader in solving how wellness and community can live in harmony and you’ll often find them leading workshops, hosting festivals, speaking at conferences, and executing panels on everything from diversity and inclusion to meditation for stress management.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We have definitely had our struggles on this bumpy road to starting a business. We thought our business would be more like a brick-and-mortar spa, but by the time we launched, we were fully a concierge business model. We originally wanted to serve the community by doing in-home wellness parties, but quickly found through our stories that our services are better served in Corporate America.

We’ve worked very long hours with many hardships and made huge sacrifices with no income. We underestimated the responsibility for every aspect of the business including mismanaging money and our team. We wore ourselves out very quickly in the process.

The pandemic has affected us in every way and we’ve made multiple pivots along the way. We are wellness providers who naturally take care of others, but taking care of ourselves has proven more difficult. It’s been a journey of finding our balance and staying grounded in our mission. In the end, we always return to our why and what problem we set out to solve in the very beginning: wellness and community living in harmony.

We’ve been impressed with TRILUNA  Wellness, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
TRILUNA is a female-owned company on a mission to make wellness accessible and enjoyable. For everyone. Our wellness is pro-donut, non-diet, anti-racist, and focused on mental health and social justice issues. We provide organizations with wellness experiences through workshops, cooking + movement classes, and curated self-care boxes.

Like many businesses we made many pivots that turned out to be very meaningful for our two-year-old business and also allowed us to work with companies like LinkedIn, DraftKings, and Salesforce on how to keep their employees engaged, how to manage stress for better mental health, and the importance of diversity and community.

One of the unique things about our company is the ability to bring people of all backgrounds together to engage in deep and meaningful conversations. We host festivals, supper clubs, and retreats all in an effort to create a space where vulnerability can co-exist with honesty so we can actually create real, actionable change.

We want to make Nashville the go-to city for progressive and innovative conversations around redefining the future of the wellness industry. Our dream is for the Mind-Body Magic Festival to become massive wellness and social justice event that brings people together from all over the south. We are a small but mighty team working incredibly hard to change this industry from the inside out and Nashville is our home. We hope to change the way people view our city and even our state with our events and curricula.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
We all heard a lot of “don’t gain the quarantine 15” or “make sure you work out every day” or “no excuses” which is just ridiculous. This mindset is full of shaming the struggle of quarantine which was out of our control. An important lesson we valued was to focus more on your mental health by finding movement that feels good for your body.

If you take the time to explore your own inner landscape instead of focusing on what others expect from you, you will flourish. Another great lesson that we love is how important it is to lean on your community for support. We could not have made it through the crisis without our community backing us up through all the changes.
