Today we’d like to introduce you to Zack Dyer.
Hi Zack, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Saint Paul Minnesota. In 2015, I made the move to Nashville, TN to pursue a career in music. I spent the first few years playing live downtown broadway at bars like Margaritaville and the Tin Roof for 4 hours at a time. It was grueling but not a bad way to make some money. I also worked for the nonprofit company, Love Your Melon at the time, where I was their content manager and social media director. After that I shorty switched to a contractor role for them as a videographer.
I began filming freelance music videos for artists in Nashville as another stream of income. I believe it was 2019 where I decided to pause performing downtown regularly and start writing songs every day. I made less money but made more progress with forwarding my career. By August 2019, I had my first publishing offer from Warner Chappell Music to write music full-time and signed my deal on November 1st, 2019. I got my first cut with Tim McGraw in 2020 along with other cuts from new artists such Drew Green, Raelyn, Matt Stell, and Lathan Warlick. I’m also looking to start cutting some of my own music as an artist coming this fall, 2021.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. A lot of odd jobs and perseverance paid off though. Moving away from family and friends is a tough start. Missing birthdays, funerals, graduations, etc., and seeing your nieces and nephews grow up on the internet takes a toll, but you just keep your nose to the grindstone.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a full-time songwriter for Warner Chappell Music in Nashville TN. I grew up playing and listening to a lot of pop and rock music, so I enjoy fusing my influences with modern-day country lyrics. I’d say Tim McGraw being my first legit cut was probably one of the coolest things that has happened to me and what I’m proud of. Along with that, just making a career in music where I can wake up every day and write songs and not worry about my bills is a blessing. This industry is basically the big leagues and publishing deals are hard to come by these days. I’m pretty proud I stuck with it.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I usually have my publisher book my co-writes and manage my calendar, but I’m always down to collaborate with new writers/artists. I always appreciate people hitting me up for a beer/coffee and just talking shop too.
