Today we’d like to introduce you to Callie Tein.
Hi Callie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to have a job that was creative and artistic, but struggled with understanding how to turn my love for art into a sustainable career. After I graduated high school, I spent the next year studying art and design where I discovered my passion for fashion design. This realization drove me to enroll at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and earn my BA in Fashion Design! After finishing my fashion degree, I worked with a variety of companies in Australia designing children’s and ready-to-wear clothing, but none of these were particularly interesting to me.
After switching through companies trying to find something I felt drawn to, I landed a position designing bridal gowns, and discovered my talent for creating memorable dresses. It was such a surreal feeling to know that the dresses I had designed from a sketch, had gone into production, and brides were actually buying them to wear at their weddings! After working with this designer for about a year, I decided to begin my own bridal design house, Modern Trousseau, and have been doing it ever since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am constantly amazed at how many brides come into our boutiques and are shocked that we make our dresses ourselves, not overseas. Each of our gowns is designed and created in our atelier in Woodbridge, Connecticut, which allows us to hand-make every gown with a nothing-less-than-perfect standard. Every Modern Trousseau dress is made for the person wearing the dress to their exact unique measurements, which allows for us to modify our designs and make endless customizations to suit each bride’s vision. This standard for manufacturing and customizing gowns intimately in the United States is unique in the bridal industry.
As a woman-owned and female-run business, I want to continue to push boundaries and bring awareness to the benefits of choosing to shop and support American-made.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
A person’s wedding day should be magical and everything they ever imagined it would be. My goal is to create a wearable work of art for each and every bride. Offering my designs to be modified in an endless amount of options like combining tops and bottoms, altering necklines, swapping laces, and changing gown color is the reason why we are the preferred design house for brides worldwide. In the fashion industry, trends come and go quickly, but I design wedding gowns that will withstand the test of time and never go out of style.
My gowns are timeless and classic, centered around clean lines and made with the finest lace and silk. Made with love in the USA, Modern Trousseau dresses evoke classic couture while expressing a vision of modern style and sophistication.
