Inspiring Conversations with Warren Smythe of Warren Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Warren Smythe.

Hi Warren, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had a love for film and the film industry. The first chapter in my story really began in the film industry when I was working as a director.  It reinforced my love for film, the people in the industry, and the ability to make an impact with artistic expression.   I’m really thankful for my experience as a director, which peaked in 2019 when the feature film “Trigger” I co-directed with Alexandra Sedlak won the Tennessee First Feature category in the Nashville Film Festival. It was a wonderful part of my journey for 12 years. But I believe both personally and in business that it is important to grow and evolve.

I started to feel a renewed drive and creative desire to express my love for the film industry in a reinvented way.  I knew in this new chapter,  I wanted to create an environment where my love for the industry could be experienced by people and creatives with the same passion for the industry, but in their own way.

Warren Studios was birthed with one set and my goal as the founder of Warren studios is to never stop creating and continuously keep designing new spaces for people to use.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any entrepreneur, I’ve gone through many challenges and there are things I’ve had to learn as I keep moving forward.  One challenge that I’ve had is setting up the most efficient system that allows me to balance the creation of new spaces with the increased traffic due to growth. These systems are part of what keeps customers happy and coming back.

I’m so thankful for the growth of Warren Studios and the talented people I’ve been fortunate to surround myself with so far. As we grow, I am adding new team members and finding people to work with that are just as passionate as I am about this industry.

As you know, we’re big fans of Warren Studios. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Located in the historic building that has been standing since 1907, Warren Studios serves as a rustic shooting location for both photography and film. This is a collection of natural spaces called the Basement, the Attic, and the Breakroom, along with the standing sets – The West Parlor, The JAIL, the Bunker, and the Sickroom.

My greatest fulfillment in running Warren Studios is creating a space that allows people to achieve the look they need through diverse sets that propel their vision to completion. I want to create unique spaces that alleviate the stress of finding a location so that every person that walks through our doors can focus on their talent, their process, and their vision.

On set is where the magic happens.

Whether someone is filming a music video or film, content for an up-and-coming artist, or a documentary, the common thread is the same. Everyone who comes in loves what they do and is passionate about creating something new. I want to create the foundation where their vision can come to life.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
There’s always been such a deep and rich history in Nashville. Recently, there’s been a resurgence. It’s a new chapter that has brought new creative energy, new people, jobs, and opportunities,  but it still holds the depth and respect of the city and the music history. I constantly meet people that have recently moved here or have traveled here for work and they’re here with smiles on their faces because they genuinely love what Nashville has to offer.

That’s how it all started and now there’s a new generation carrying that torch. It’s vibrant energy. You can’t get rid of that. This might sound silly but I can’t think about anything I seriously don’t like about Nashville.  Everything I once did not like, I now have come to love. But if I had to pick one thing I would have to say the humidity.
