Today we’d like to introduce you to Shonta Jackson.
Hi Shonta, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always loved photography. I started enjoying it more in my early twenties. I would take photos of nature and landscapes which was very relaxing for me. In 2016 I was surprised with my first dslr and was encouraged to take the Art form more seriously to see where it would lead me. My first clients were my two toddlers who were ages 3 and 1.5 at the time. After chasing them around and capturing those sweet candid moments I knew I could handle other children and families as well. Today my specialty is lifestyle, family, couples/engagement, and slowly getting into weddings.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been some challenges, but overall it has not been many obstacles that I’ve faced. I will say that one of the challenges that are constant is helping potential clients understand the value of photography and them understanding the value of your worth. I think many people view photography as just point and shoot, but not realizing there are many aspects that help bring the photos to life. Although there are many other great photographers in my area and worldwide, I do not allow what others around me are doing, but I focus on what I can do better, how I can expand my brand, and sticking to my niche.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer that specializes in Lifestyle, Family, Couples/Engagement and now I’m starting to get into Weddings. As a photographer, I am most proud of my growth from 2016 up to now. I see that my style hasn’t changed, but how I apply myself in each session; I make sure from the consultation to the session that I am setting positive expectations and results. One thing that stands out in my work is my ability to use natural light and find locations that speak to the clients.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My husband has been my biggest advocate; He is the one who encouraged me to step away from being a hobbyist and seriously pursue photography professionally. I do have a great support system that includes family, friends, clients, and fellow photographers. They support me by booking sessions, sending referrals, helping with sessions, sharing content, and providing feedback.
