Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel Lockett.
Hi Mel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was raised in North Carolina in a military household. I was always the creative person growing up and moved to Florida to go to art school. I started out as a computer animator, making avatars and instructional videos for various companies, and realized that I did not want to go down that path. I began tattooing after college, using my art degree and design background to gain an apprenticeship from my favorite tattoo artist in the area. I tattooed around the Tampa Florida area for around five years before I decided to take a leap and move to Nashville.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It was relatively smooth in comparison to other horror stories I’ve heard. I had the support and respect from my mentor and most of my clients but being a black woman had its struggles. Unfortunately, it was a man’s world when I started tattooing and many people would not trust me to be their artist because I did not fit the typical tattoo artist stereotype.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most known for my fine line and minimal tattoos, black and grey and watercolor. I am also sought after for my Harry Potter-themed pieces. I think what sets me apart from others is the quality of artwork, my creative style, and the overall experience you receive while working with me.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I hope to see more eco-friendly tattoo materials and supply options. It should become the norm to replace or deviate from our reliance on plastics. We are also much more diverse and the trend is to be more accepting of changing trends and technology. We use social media to network and share portfolios. It’s been great for business and shows how accessible and personable we actually are.
