Daily Inspiration: Meet Rob Vincent

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Vincent.

Hi Rob, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started playing music when I was 6 years old. I took classical piano lessons until I was in high school and then began to explore the production side of music. I went to the University of North Florida in Jacksonville to study music technology and production. My time in Jacksonville was extremely formational for me. I played at multiple churches in my years there and learned to run tracks, direct a band, and explore recording and production. I produced my first projects while I was there, including a live album called “Sound of the House” with Austin and Lindsey Adamec, and multiple independent projects. In the summer of 2019, I took an internship with producer/songwriter Hank Bentley here in Nashville. After that summer I knew I wanted to move here once I had graduated. In the fall of 2020, I moved to Nashville, and I’ve been working on several projects, including a new EP with a local artist, LYNN (Shameless plug – keep an eye out for it!).

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggles I’ve faced on my own journey are self-confidence and time management. I’ve always known that I feel the most alive, the most like myself when I’m making music, but it can be really scary to think about taking the leap to that being my entire career. When that starts to feel daunting, I often get in a negative headspace feeling like I’m not good enough or original enough to keep up with a multitude of musicians in the world (especially in Nashville). I’ve had to learn to trust myself and my creativity and remind myself that I am capable and good at what I do. Also, it’s just tough to deal with the “working a day job to pay the bills while trying to keep up with music clients in the limited time I have” situation. Sometimes I find it very difficult to be creative and inspired when I feel so drained from working a job that I feel unattached to. But thankfully my calendar helps with that. I’ve found that blocking time in my calendar (sounds lame, I know) helps me to stay in a creative and positive mindset for when I sit down after a long day to work on music.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a music producer and multi-instrumentalist. I play keys, bass, and guitar, but my specialty is keys. My goal as a producer is to work with artists to bring their vision for their music to life. I love connecting with people and hearing the heart and the process behind their songs. I’ve worked with a variety of different artists and explored different genres, including worship, indie, rock, pop, punk, and film. I have the ability to merge my classical training with a modern approach. With every track I produce, I want it to sound like something new and fresh, and ultimately, I want to listen to a song at the end of production and know that it is even greater than what I, or the artist, could have imagined.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see a trend to more remote and from-home music-making. I think COVID was huge for the music industry to learn to collaborate from afar, and I think it will just continue to grow in that way. I produced a track this summer fully remotely for Radiant Church in Tampa, FL, and it was a really fun experience! Kinda crazy to think that I never even met the vocalist, but we created a song together!
