Conversations with Rebecca Grome

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Grome.

Hi Rebecca, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I purchased Ears 4 U Hearing Services in July 2018 when the previous owner decided to join his wife in retirement. At the time, though I had a solid graph on my clinician skills, running a business was a completely different animal.

With a baby at home and another on the way, I had to figure things out very quickly! After educating myself on all things insurance and making my fair share of bad business decisions, I found there to be a very obvious need for an Audiologist who specializes in hearing loss with musicians.

Things evolved and eventually Ears 4 U Hearing Services became the “go-to” for musicians in-ear monitors, custom hearing protection, tinnitus services, hearing evaluations, and hearing conservation.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Anytime you find an owner/clinician combo, you should know we all have our fair share of struggles. Mine personally is finding a balance between my work life and personal… sometimes, I have to sit on my computer after the kiddos go to bed just to stay afloat.

I think my biggest obstacle was the downtime (seven months!) and business disruption after someone drove their car through the building and into my reception area. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but it was a mess!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My job is great… I see so many different “types” of patients per day. Typically you would think as an Audiologist that I’m just seeing old people and selling hearing aids. That is so far from the truth! I’ve heard a rumor I’m known for being the “Musician Audiologist” which means I get to work with younger artists (they just CRAVE knowledge) as well as those who have been established in music for years.

Every individual has their own take on things, a unique fingerprint of experience, therefore it’s so rewarding to work with those individuals in taking the steps to correct or conserve their hearing. I somehow also got roped into a TikTok that went viral for wax removal… so now I get a lot of phone calls for that too.

I’m most proud of how far I’ve come as both a provider, as well as a business owner. I firmly believe that a great team is the only way to get through the day, and right now my team is awesome. My job as an employer is to know every aspect of this business, and encourage my team to want more responsibility, love coming to work, and feel validated.

Hopefully, I’ve improved at delegation and delivery… something I greatly lacked before having employees (and children!).

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Too many to name… my husband for dealing with my constant lack of headspace. There is a network of private practice audiologists that I greatly rely on for moral and business support. It’s great to know that I’m not alone in dealing with the changing landscape of insurance reimbursement and the rise of online hearing aid sales.

I also have a business consultant here in Nashville and as much as I hate to admit it, I really appreciate her giving me honest advice about every decision I make.

Pricing:

  • Hearing aids do not need to be unobtainable. My single unit price ranges from $850-$2600 per ear, dependent on what your individual needs are.
