Rising Stars: Meet Dasia Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dasia Washington.

Hi Dasia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Being physically active changed my life in so many ways. There was a point in time where I avoided physical activity like the plague. I even ditched PE all throughout my school years. But my life changed once I started working out a few years ago, I had more energy, I was stronger, happier, I had found a global community so that even when I moved to Nashville from Vegas alone for work, I knew that I would be alright.

Fast forward 2 years and a pandemic, I needed a new way to get cardio into my day after twisting my ankle on a run had left me high and dry for a few weeks, so I picked up a pair of rollerskates.

I fell in love almost immediately and even though I had spent the three previous years off the grid with no social media, I decided to create an Instagram to share my skate journey and hopefully get people excited about starting something new that also got them outside and exercising.

I love teaching and learning (I build training content for big tech at my big girl job), so I started creating beginner tutorials so that people wouldn’t find themselves getting discouraged and it kind of blew up.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenge for me has been going from no social media for so long to having over 20,000 followers in less than six months. That’s been the biggest adjustment personally.

I left social media so that I could focus on cultivating the life that I was portraying online and I am so glad to say that time away enabled me to do so many great things as well as give me a solid foundation for who I am, my values and what’s most important to me now that I’m back online.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In my professional career, I build out training content, I have always loved breaking down difficult concepts into bite-size pieces and it has translated over really well for my Instagram page.

I think that’s what sets me apart is knowing inherently how to communicate with a wide range of people but also, I do it because it truly brings me joy to see people trying something new that is also doubling up on improving their physical mental, and emotional health. I am proud of the community that I have built both online and in person.

It takes a ton of time, but for me, it’s worth it. If one person consumes my content and decides to buy a pair of skates or start exercising that is 100% worth it.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
It’s almost taboo to speak about what good might have come from Covid but I’ll be honest. One of the most beautiful things that I saw was how many people were now venturing outside.

Finding comfort in new ways. People who had never exercised or played outside for recreation were now jogging or picking up new hobbies that pushed them outside.

There’s beauty in the darkness if you know where to look.
