Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabyn Mayfield.
Hi Sabyn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
To be honest, my creative journey started in film. Music has always been my first love, but I didn’t really have the confidence in my voice, the tools, or know how to pursue it. Additionally, I grew up in the film industry so it was a natural gravitational pull to express myself through that medium.
But through the confidence I gained making films, I was able to start writing and recording my own music.
It was a very isolated pursuit at first, something I only shared with one other person. As I improved slightly, I was able to share with another. Which opened up a door to record with someone more skilled, which led to yet another opportunity, and so on and so forth. This all really culminated in releasing a collection of music featured on TV shows for MTV & CMT.
After this, I really took a hiatus and focussed on writing, directing, and producing a few feature films and documentaries. But during the pandemic, I connected with my father (Randy Parton) for the first time. Through the course of this relationship, and prior to his passing, I found an old record of his that I sampled. I then wrote and recorded my own song for him entitled: “Oh Tennessee.”
This led to him suggesting I do another song in the same format, but sampling a song of his sisters, my aunt Dolly. Based on these tracks and another I recorded, I signed a deal with sonaBLAST! Records and released my debut EP on July 30th, 2021.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth ride?! That is kind of a loaded question. This has been a lifelong journey, with ups and downs, starts and stops, and the like. So I don’t know that it’s been smooth. But what I can say is, when the time was right, and I found my sound and my voice, the stars aligned in a way that could be seen as smooth.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As I mentioned before, I started my career in film. I founded the production company Stay Fly LLC in January of 2012. Through that company I have produced, written, and directed numerous award-winning feature films, short films, documentaries, and music videos; not only for myself but for others.
Film was my bread and butter for many years, while I silently chipped away at writing and recording music that I released for fun and for free. But I would say that over the course of the last 10 years I began to have more opportunities in music that solidified this as a legitimate pursuit for me. And with a catalog of songs I’d written and recorded, it allowed me to confidently pitch myself as a bona fide music artist. While music is now first and foremost, I have a lot of balance creatively. I am recording and releasing music full-time, while simultaneously shooting content.
I think what sets me apart is being a dual-threat in film and music. And the fact that one did not cause the other. These are two separate entities that I established independently of one another, that are now intertwining in a beautiful and impactful way.
And what am I most proud of? That I really started from the bottom. I had to climb the proverbial ladder. Which gave me a tremendous amount of tools and experience in various capacities. All that experience combined at present makes me a force to be reckoned with creatively and on the business side.
Long story short, I know what I’m doing, I know how to do it, and I know what I’m talking about.
This really aids in not being taken for a ride, which many folks are in creative pursuits.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
As of late, a lot of focus has been given to my back story and the fact that I am related to Randy and Dolly Parton. That’s been a fun fact to share in conjunction with releasing my debut EP. Especially since I have songs with both of them on it.
BUT, there is so much more of my story that I have not had the chance to share yet, that I am eagerly looking forward to. And lastly, while people like to focus on the celebrity of my father’s side of the family, the person that made me who I am today is my mother Laray Mayfield.
If you don’t know who she is, look it up, you’ll be impressed.
