Today we’d like to introduce you to Fiona Silver.
Hi Fiona, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a musician originally from NYC. Growing up, in New York I was influenced by a lot of different cultures. I started writing songs when I was a teenager and performing soon after. It didn’t take long before I had the itch to travel, and started touring everywhere I could- usually a route that hit Nashville going between New York and Austin, TX.
A lot happened in life… heartbreaks, growing up, losing loved ones, growing as a person and artist, and music has always been a constant for me amongst all the changing tides.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nah, it’s rarely been smooth. There’s been a lot of highs and lows, but it’s never been boring. Being an independent artist has definitely been a struggle because I’ve had to wear so many hats and do so many jobs (graphic designer, social media manager, art director, bandleader, manager, booking agent, etc.) just to feel like you’re keeping up on some level.
On a personal level – working through grief, anxiety, depression, and recovery has to lead to a kind of spiritual journey that has also been rocky but filled with hope and love too.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My music spans a pretty wide range of emotions and sonic attitudes, but my voice is always the glue that keeps it defined. In this day and age, people are constantly being told to fit into a box so that someone else can easily market them, a copy and paste kind of philosophy. I think it lacks imagination, and I gravitate towards artists who aren’t afraid to blend genres or experiment, and most importantly speak their truth.
Not everyone gets it, and that’s okay, but when people do it’s so real and validating. Inwardly, I’m most proud of staying true to myself and what moves me. Externally, I’m most proud of my time touring with Gary Clark Jr. and being able to share the stage with him, and one particularly cool experience with Carlos Santana too!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a bit defiant. I didn’t particularly like authority figures or school, but I loved anything creative, and I enjoyed learning about history and politics, anything with a good story. I had a lot of friends but I also did my own thing, and ended up leaving my high school and graduating early, and moved to California for a bit. I’m kind of a wild card, I guess.
