Today we’d like to introduce you to Shea Sines.
Hi Shea, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started this business in 2019, shortly after we had relocated and while my husband was deployed overseas. Our last move had gone terribly wrong, and it would be nearly six months before our moving claim for extensive loss and damage was fully resolved.
I was a frustrated consumer on a mission to prevent others from picking up the pieces of a bad move. Today we offer a variety of products focused on helping with moving organizations, including our bestselling color-coded moving box labels.
We’ve started out just on Etsy and have gotten an overwhelming response in just a year, and so we are working on getting on Amazon and our own website as well to begin expanding our moving supply store!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is never a smooth road, and I’ve definitely encountered my fair share of unique roadblocks. As a military spouse, I chose to pursue my business ideas because I knew it would offer more flexibility with small kids at home and a husband that is usually gone for most of the year for work; however, as much as I love the flexibility, it has definitely not been easy with babies and toddlers who need your full attention!
Another interesting struggle was obviously the pandemic, with many moves coming to a grinding halt in the early months of 2020. Thankfully, the moving industry quickly recovered and has actually struggled to keep up with the demand – and so we are seeing a significant increase in moves this year! Perhaps my biggest struggle is the fact that I take a more personalized approach to my product design compared to my competitors, which is awesome for consumers but much more time-consuming on my end.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Founded by a U.S. military spouse and seasoned mover, BoxOps® is a pioneer specializing in unique solutions for the multibillion-dollar relocation industry. Our vision is to streamline complexities and challenge the status quo. We currently offer the widest array of moving organization tools on the market, with plans for a more expansive venture.
BoxOps® is unique to the moving world in that we serve the needs of both everyday consumers AND moving-related businesses. Our core mission is to help moving clients feel prepared, educated, and organized going into a home relocation while empowering companies to create an unforgettable experience for customers. We love working with realty/mortgage companies, professional organizers, moving companies, small retailers, and more.
Knowing how high the military spouse unemployment rates are, we’ve always felt inspired to build our business model around the goal of hiring spouses remotely from all over the world. I look forward to finally being able to hire in the future and bringing on the often-overlooked and undervalued military spouse and veteran communities!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
My original dream was to work in the sports world. I have a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Sports Administration and had every intention of working for college or professional sports organizations.
Along with playing college basketball, I’ve interned or worked in ESPN broadcasting, Alabama Athletics, NASCAR, the American Le Mans Racing Series, and more. Unfortunately, the military lifestyle is not always conducive to our career aspirations as spouses, because we are supporting the servicemember through intense training/deployment schedules and moving around so much. I ultimately decided to step away from the sports world to focus on my kids and other opportunities.
After a few years of feeling hopeless, I realized I was holding myself back. With each move, it was a painful cycle of filling out dozens of job applications for low-level positions or odd jobs that barely paid for groceries. So that was definitely my tipping point in starting a business – and although I NEVER expected to start a moving supplies company, I’ve never felt more passionate! I believe passion empowers us to be more creative and innovative, and I don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon.
