Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Carney.
Hi Christina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am opening Sun & Rose Salon on November 1, 2021. This has been a dream since high school when I first entered the beauty industry at just 14 years old. However, during the lockdown, I realized I had been experiencing burnout doing hair. I was pushing myself to the maximum to try to feel the joy I once had. I finally started reflecting and realized it was my atmosphere. The industry isn’t one-size-fits-all, and many shops tend to treat us as such. I realized I had a specific vision for myself and my career over the past eight months, I have worked so hard to make those visions come to life.
I would spend night after night building my Instagram, taking extra clients after hours, practicing new techniques, and educating myself. I wanted to make sure I was ready for this. About a month before I registered my business, multiple clients started asking me about my future endeavors, more long-term goals, and many started to tell me how great I’d be as a leader or running my own salon. This kind of solidified or confirmed I was where I was meant to be.
Now, I’m two weeks away from opening my doors as Sun & Rose Salon and although this is a small business, I’m the only employee, over the next five years; I have many plans to expand and create a salon no one has ever seen before.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Surprisingly yes. The hardest part is getting out of my own head, my skills come naturally. I feel so connected to hair that it almost feels easier than walking some days. (I have a disability and limp, lol). I would say my biggest challenge was keeping everything a secret and realizing who you can trust in the beginning.
If you have questions, which I did, there are so many resources to use. It might take time to find your answer but it’s out there!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At my current salon, I’m what I’d consider a “jack of all trades” however, I specialize primarily with blondes, all types of extensions, and men’s cutting. I also love copper colors. My main focus at Sun & Rose Salon will be color and extensions- this is a foreshadow of what’s to come in the next five years!
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’d love to team up with local photographers and set designers to collab with artists and musicians. I’ve done a few stylings on some upcoming artists and would LOVE to dive deeper into the music industry.
