Exploring Life & Business with Hayley Sechler of SKINriched

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hayley Sechler.

Hi Hayley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up just south of Birmingham, AL with my older sister, Lauren (who also now resides in Nashville), and my two amazing parents. I was into all things dance, cheer, music, and reality TV. Ironically, I had not-so-great skin. As early as 11 years old I started experiencing acne and acne scarring which continued well into my college years. Despite multiple visits to the dermatologist growing up, it seemed like nothing really worked for me. Having skin issues truly affects one’s self-confidence and this experience has allowed me to better relate to my patients. It has also sparked an interest to look for a deeper, root cause for skincare issues- especially for women.

I earned my bachelor’s degree in Nutrition Science from Auburn University. During my education, I was intrigued by the aging process, as well as how food and environmental factors affect our health and genetics. In 2017 I started my master’s degree at the University of Kentucky with a degree in Physician Assistant Studies. I always knew I loved working directly with people, getting to know them, and developing relationships with them. I also enjoyed performing procedures and seeing a physical end result to my work.

After working in medical dermatology for 2 years, I realized I wanted to focus more on the aesthetic side of dermatology while incorporating nutrition and wellness. I also wanted to be able to spend more time with my patients. In addition, I had just had my first baby, Holden who is now one year old. Being a mom opened my eyes to the physical, mental and emotional demand of being a parent while also working full time. I knew I wanted to focus my skills on making other women look and feel their absolute best. That is when the idea of SKINriched Aesthetics + Wellness became a reality.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Sometimes I wish my journey had been easier or less stressful… but then again, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Of course, school can be stressful. I moved 8 hours away from home to a town where I didn’t know anyone. That was also difficult at first. A few of my biggest struggles have resulted from always putting others before myself regardless of the situation or how it made me feel, thus suppressing my own needs and emotions. If you follow the enneagram, I am a 2w3- which means I am a helper + achiever. I thrive on close relationships, words of affirmation, putting others first, and always looking for ways to improve and achieve goals.

I’m also a huge advocate for mental health. We have to first take care of ourselves before we can care for others at our highest capacity and potential. While I was in undergrad, I, unfortunately, experienced a sexual assault. It took me a long time to be able to talk about trauma, anxiety, and guilt. Now I realize that everyone goes through challenging times, but those difficulties and how we cope is what makes us who we are.

My family and friends have always been encouraging and supportive of everything I do. I think that has helped me be persistent and not give up in times of difficulty. I am so thankful for those who have supported me through my crazy ideas and dreams!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about SKINriched?
I specialize in Aesthetic Medicine and Wellness. What does that entail? Pretty much anything to make you look and feel your best. As we age, we may become more self-conscious of changes going on within our body- both internal and external.

I’d say what sets me apart from others is that I combine my background in nutrition with my formalized medical training to provide an overall comprehensive and holistic approach for my patients. This allows me to look at the “whole picture” which in return gives us optimal results. I’m also very approachable and accessible. I give all of my patients my direct phone number that they can call or text anytime. I also like to give a “behind the scenes” look on social media so that people can follow along and see what I’m all about, what treatments entail, what their results could look like, etc. I don’t ever want people to be intimidated or anxious when they come to see me!

My passion lies in being able to get to know you, what your concerns are, and then develop a treatment plan together. I see multiple skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation (dark spots, melasma), fine lines and wrinkles, etc. I also enjoy working with patients on their hormonal changes, fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, as well as other aging concerns.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
One of my favorite things is mentoring and just being there for other young women trying to enter the same field as me. What’s worked well for me is being transparent with others, and building a community of like-minded women you can trust and go to for questions and support.
