Hidden Gems: Meet Tyrese Hobbs of The Covenant Apparel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyrese Hobbs.

Hi Tyrese, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Born and raised in Nashville, TN–Bordeaux area to be more specific. I am an only child that was raised by my mom in a single parent household. My dad was present in my life, but not enough to teach me how to be a man. I had found myself spending more time with my cousins as our relationships soon shifted to siblings. I found a newfound deep love and respect for family. I can honestly say that they have had my back since the beginning and always believed in me. My mom is the epitome of strength, perseverance, and courage. I am where I am today because she was such a great role model and example of how to navigate through life against everything that is thrown at you.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This tickled me. Life has never been smooth sailing. I’ve taken more losses than I could possibly count. I lost my big cousin, Antwand Covington Jr., in 2012 due to gun violence. This was a very crippling time in my life where I was completely confused, hurt, and angered. However, I knew that he loved me and had my back while he was here so I knew he’d have it after he left. He inspired me because he was 17 years old when he was killed and he literally lived such a free-spirited and impactful life. Within 17 years, he had accomplished so much and was only just getting started and even though his life was cut short he had touched so many people’s lives. In 2018, I was in a terrible car accident where the car flipped multiple times but I was blessed to walk out alive with my brother, Jordan. In 2019-2020, I suffered from depression and was in a very dark place mentally. This year alone, 2021, I’ve lost about 5 or 6 family members and friends. The one that hurt the most was my cousin, Kyrin Monget, who was more like a brother. He went missing around my 22nd birthday and about a week later was found dead. This definitely set me back because I honestly couldn’t believe I lost another brother. In addition to that I was in my last semester of undergrad taking a full course load while working two jobs. I was struggling so much because I had all of this on my plate. Then not long after my grandma from my dad side passed away. My bro Elijah Horton passed away in September. So this year has been full of obstacles and lessons.

We’ve been impressed with The Covenant Apparel, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner and chief executive officer of The Covenant Apparel, which is an aspirational clothing brand. The goal of the brand is to inspire young teens and adults to take that first step toward their dreams and goals. I am very passionate about helping others and love to see others happy. Therefore, I wanted to create a business that is unique in the way it brings motivation and fashion to the same conversation. We have a strong following on Instagram that really enjoys our Motivational Monday posts, which are posts that I write myself. The Covenant Apparel is known for spreading positive messages, holding ourselves accountable, and not giving up when things get hard. I currently provide the creative direction for the entire business. I am in the process of learning to design my own clothing. I have also designed my website. I have designed and launched a motivational journal, ‘The Light is Yours’, with the intent to help our customers discover their light. What sets The Covenant Apparel apart from others is the fact that we care more about the impact that we can leave with others. The Light is Yours- is our slogan. We want people to embody the slogan and take charge in their life. I am most proud of the development and growth of the business and how it aligns with the vision that I have. I want the readers to know that we are just getting started! Our next collection is the Dreamer Collection which will debut Fall/Winter 2022. Until then the readers and our followers can expect small shock drops, more motivational content, and the second part of the motivational journal!

What matters most to you?
Impacting others. This matters the most to me because as long as I have an impact on the people I interact with while I’m here and as long as I make them feel something even when I am called to leave this place. I will still be with them and I will be here changing lives through my story. I want my story to inspire people and show them that even from the darkest and lowest places you can move upward and forward. You never have to settle and take the life you’re given. I want people to know that they are in control of their lives and that it is foolish to do anything other than what makes you happy. The Light is Yours.
