Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Forbes.
Hi Nikki, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
My name is Nikki Forbes and I am a pop singer-songwriter from Asheville, North Carolina. I’ve been singing and performing for as long as I can remember but I started writing songs when I was just six years old. I got really serious about it at twelve years old when I learned to play acoustic guitar after my mom “assigned” me to learn a couple of chords from YouTube for a homeschooling assignment. After being able to accompany me, my writing really took off and I started seeing myself as an artist.
In high school, I was in songwriting classes for three years and was mentored by my teacher Cary Cooper who was instrumental in helping me grow in my writing. I recorded my debut EP my senior year of high school with Chris Rosser in Asheville, NC as part of an independent study and sold out my release show! I have since released a set of remixes and two singles and am working on some very exciting releases that will debut soon! I started college at Western Carolina University studying Commercial Music and Audio Production as a Commercial Voice major.
I’m currently a senior at WCU and am sharpening my musical knowledge and skill every day through academics and also my personal projects. This summer, I moved to Nashville to pursue an internship at a recording studio and get involved in the Nashville music community. I was immediately embraced by the incredible songwriting community and built some amazing friendships and connections and Nashville quickly became home to me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Creating, writing, and releasing music can be a very vulnerable experience and there are plenty of talented artists out there doing it. However, the comparison game and social media can quickly make us doubt our skill, ability, creativity, and value if we spend too much time dwelling on other people’s careers and becoming unsatisfied with our own.
It’s great to be inspired but there is a fine line between inspiration and self-deprecation. I’ve had my fair share of doubt and questioned my passion and career path. But there is nothing else I would rather do than create and share music. I think that is part of my purpose and I won’t let discouragement steal that joy from me.
Being an independent artist and managing your own career can be very stressful and overwhelming. I fulfill every role on my team: management, marketing/promotion, booking, administration, creativity, A&R, PR, and more. It can be hard to juggle all of it and be a full-time student. I’m constantly learning more about what I need, want, and how to find balance in satisfying all my roles.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a singer-songwriter, musician, and producer and I primarily write in the pop vein but love writing with people in all different genres. I also often partner with EDM producers to write and create pop electronic music. I write honest and vulnerable music that gives my listeners an intimate look into my life, thoughts, and personal stories.
I have started to produce my own music recently, which is exciting and feels really empowering to be able to have complete creative control of what my audience hears and how it’s presented. I believe music is made to connect us. There is so much division in the world and music can bring together a group of strangers like nothing else.
We can connect through shared experiences, emotions, excitement, and a passion for music. I love creating music that can make us feel less isolated and communicate experiences and ideas in a fresh way.
