Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Boyden.
Hi Sofia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I first began singing lessons at eight years old just for fun! Music was always something that sparked my interest as a little girl, especially country music. I love storytelling. I played theaters, county fairs, anything I could to get my name out there. From there, I found a love for being on stage and performing and connecting through lyrics with an audience. I was a part of Seattle Talent for a few years and really loved acting too. I auditioned for the spring musicals in my high school and played ensemble members, which was always the most fun! I thought I wanted to pursue a career in music theater, so I auditioned for a performing arts college in Los Angeles and got accepted. While I was down in LA, I began networking and eventually ended up in front of label VPs at Universal Music Group and Atlantic Records, but my heart still wanted country music and I knew I couldn’t walk away from that dream. I released a self-titled EP and a couple years later, I moved to Nashville. I couldn’t be happier that I chased my dream of country music and that I get to be in Nashville working towards everything I want!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth ride getting here. A lot of my struggles came from self-doubt and comparison to other people in the industry who look like they have life “figured out”. I think that’s a pretty common struggle in this industry, you know, seeing others achieve your dreams and thinking that you will never get there and that it’s better to just pick a different career. That has been the biggest struggle. But you have to believe deep in your soul that you were made for this career and life and all that comes with it to push past the negative thoughts.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an aspiring country music singer from Nashville, TN. I love what country music represents and its storytelling aspect. My goal is to bring back real country music! I am inspired by the greats- George Strait, Travis Tritt, Reba, Jo Dee Messina, Gretchen Wilson, and so many others.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I think it is so important to have a mentor. It takes a lot to find a good one. Networking is just as important! If you aren’t doing anything for your growth, you will never make it. Put yourself out there, go to the writers rounds, go to Broadway and make connections with the performers, write alone in your room, just do something everyday that will get you one step closer to where you want to be.
