Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiney Hiland.
Hi Destiney, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am the owner of Slick’s Hair Company, Music City Locs & Destiney La’Chay Beauty! All of my Businesses are Located inside of IStudio Nashville! We offer Every Service that you can think of when it comes to Beauty! We offer Trendsetting Loc Styles, haircuts, braids, hair color, extensions, nails, eye brows+lashes, make up, facials, body waxing, teeth whitening and more… I have been doing hair since a little girl. We have always Had a full-blown hair salon in our home. I’ve been traveling going to hair shows all over the world with my parents since the age of six. I began taking clients after school in 6th grade. I was already great at styling /cutting hair but I learned a lot about locs from Lita, a Loctician here in Nashville who worked with my dad at Vernon Winfreys Barbershop. I owe a lot to her! Locs then became my specialty. It would take me all night long to do a client when I first started, fast forward to today it may only take me 20 minutes!
Sometimes servicing 10-15 people a day! I began being recognized for my fast speed and because I could cut their hair as well. They loved that they didn’t have to go see a barber afterwards. I enrolled in barber college at the age of 16 at Music City Barber College. My father David Hiland was not only the owner of the school but was my Instructor as well… My Mom Lakrista is a Cosmetologist as well! She has always kept my hair in different styles since I was a baby. I would be there right beside her after school when she attended cosmetology school as well! There was no way around it, I was Destined for the Beauty Industry. I got my own salon suite at 16 and first full-service shop at 17. Beauty is my passion. Over the past 13 years, I have maintained a strong clientele, who travels from all over to come sit in my chair. I love how my clientele is so diverse… Tennessee Titans, Nfl players, Ncaa players, celebrities, musicians, sheriffs, doctors, lawyers, local artists, Farmers, actors, dentists, photographers, you name it! The demand for my services are out of this roof! I wish I could service everyone. However, I was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome and have had to take a major step back from behind the chair and focus on the business side more.
December 30th, 2020, I had three hand surgeries (2 carpal tunnels & 1 trigger finger surgery). All from doing hair. I am almost a year post partum& still recovering. I have learned, I have to work smarter and not harder. I have had to regain my strength all over again since my surgeries. It’s like I’ve had to make a choice, myself or my clients? However, being only one stylist behind the chair just wasn’t enough for the demand of clientele that I have. I have began teaching classes and only accepting a certain amount of clients per week. I no longer take new clients unless being a model for a class. Due to this, I can proudly can say I have expanded into a team of 13. Also, I now have my own product line! My signature growth oil “My juices and berries” has been selling like crazy and works like magic! It makes me feel so good to help/make others feel and look good! I’m very impressed with My Businesses today and super excited for what’s in store! My Team is Accepting new clientele for all services! They are killing it! If you’re in Nashville, you should definitely be booking with My Team! Whether it’s for a spa day, special occasion, wedding, concert, you name it. You can find us on vagaro & you can purchase your hair /beauty products at www.Destineylachaybeauty.com.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur definitely can be challenging sometimes. You have to learn to find the balance between work and your personal life. It’s okay to have a mentor when your getting started. Always stay open-minded. Have expectations but never get upset if you get let down or something doesn’t happen fast enough. Progress is always better than nothing. Consistency is key! The road won’t/hasn’t always been easy.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My team specializes in healthy hair! Some stylists only focus on the style/final look however we take pride in promoting healthy hair care services with natural /professional products. Who wants an itchy scalp but a beautiful style? We make sure you look and feel good!
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Going to the “Shop” with my parents. Sweeping the floors to get paid. Lol.
