Hi Jasmine & Carlton, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
We are Jasmine and Carlton Horton, a daddy-daughter duo from Nashville, TN. Together we operate Horton Transportation, Horton Transfer, Horton Solutions, and our education platform Daddy Daughter Trucking Academy. Our Story starts with my father who started his career as a driver in 2000. Upon his release from prison, he worked as a tree trimmer and was laid off right around Christmas 1999. He needed to provide for his family so he took his savings and purchased his first truck. My father worked as an owner-operator until 2014 when he opened Horton Transportation. In three years, he was able to establish the company and cultivate a family-like culture that extends second chances to all. We like to joke and say we are a family of misfits, but we truly have an awesome team! In 2016 I left my position in HR to help revamp the back office and learn the trucking industry beyond being a passenger. Since then, we have doubled our assets, streamlined our processes, and helped countless people reach their goals in the Transportation Industry. We are company that aids our drivers in gaining the needed skill sets to become independent in this industry. In the last four years, we have helped several of our drivers become owner-operators within 24 months through our retired truck purchase program. We are passionate about teaching and giving a realistic view of how this industry works. Trucking is not something we do for a living, it’s our lifestyle.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As the Transportation Industry gains more popularity, a lot of people are under the impression that trucking is easy. Getting into the industry is very simple, however, people are not speaking about what it takes to stay in compliance. Trucking is a highly regulated industry. Those regulations are where we took some of our biggest financial hits and learned our biggest lessons. Since opening in 2014 we have made close to a million dollars in mistakes which is what prompted us to start Daddy Daughter Trucking Academy. We like to layout our mistakes in hopes of helping others avoid them. We have gone through four major company overhauls where we basically take inventory of what works, what does not, implement new processes, and retire others. When COVID-19 hit we had a fleet of 30 trucks that included owner-operators and company drivers. Once we got into the thick of the pandemic, we were forced to close our doors for 45 days. Once we reopened, we went through yet another overhaul. We decided to move forward utilizing only company assets. With every obstacle, we have been blessed enough to be able to learn from them, implement appropriate changes, and expand the original vision of Horton Transportation. As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Horton Transportation is a regional trucking company that specializes in dry and refrigerated freight. Horton Solutions is our Freight brokerage that services customers nationwide and Horton Transfer is our local dump truck company. Daddy Daughter Trucking Academy is our most recent venture and the one I am most proud of! We offer three different courses to assist you in joining the Transportation Industry. We have the Dispatch Clinic that offers all of the foundational information needed to speak the language of industry and set up your own Independent Dispatch Company. Once you take the Dispatch Clinic you can build on your knowledge with our Carrier and Broker Packs. If you want to become a carrier, we walk you through the process and explain all of the mistakes we made along the way and the same goes for those who want to become a Freight Broker. Every class comes with access to an online community where you can ask questions and get additional help. We like to take a hands-on approach offering our students onsite workshops and visual examples to simplify the processes. I am a proud student of YouTube University! I like to watch different podcasts that spotlight various areas of the Trucking Industry like Truck N’ Hustle and The Social Proof Podcast. I also always try to start my day with some type of self-help or inpsiratiational material. I enjoy watching Sarah Jakes Roberts and The School Of Greatness Podcast. The main goal in trucking is to keep the calm. As an industry professional you set the tone when interacting with drivers, brokers, dispatchers, and any other key players. Trucking has its moments where things escalate, but I try to be proactive and prepared by practicing emotional control through meditation, listening to music, or simply stepping away for a reset.
