Today we’d like to introduce you to Res Ipsa Loquitor.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
One morning, while Luke McIlvenna was sitting in his Business Law class, his professor was lecturing and out of nowhere he said “Res Ipsa Loquitur would be a great band name.” Luke quickly snapped out of his daydream and pen fidgeting and his mind went to work. After spelling the phrase wrong because Luke was such a good student, the band Res Ipsa Loquitor was born.
The name comes from the Latin language and translates to “the thing speaks for itself’ which, with some fancy rewording, is the idea behind the band. We want the music to tell a story, we want the music to find a way to relate to you, and all-in-all, we want the music to speak for itself. Our new EP is meant to represent everything that we love about rock music and tell our own unique stories of how we came together.
After some recent roster changes, the band currently operates as a trio in Nashville, TN with Luke Mcilvenna on vocals and guitar, Gabe Page on guitar, and Ethan Miller on Bass.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every road has its bumps. No road is ever smooth, you either hit the bumps or look ahead to avoid them. We initially struggled with consistency of our roster and the pandemic nearly stopped us altogether. However, now that the band is back in Nashville, we have more time and face-to-face interactions that speed up our creative process and enable us to play live shows again. We still struggle with finding a full-time drummer looking to be involved in operations and the creative process. For now, we have a network of drummers that we can hire for shows and recording but that is not our long-term goal.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We specialize in harnessing the sound of classic rock like Aerosmith, Extreme, Soundgarden, etc… while keeping it fresh and new.
We are most proud of our new EP because we believe it expresses everything about who we are and how we as a group came to be.
What sets us apart is our unique perspective and blend of styles. We also strive to keep a genuine persona in order to connect with any number of people because we truly believe music has healing powers, emotional and physical.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
We have learned that the world is adaptable and that there is opportunity for playing shows and creating new music no matter the obstacles. It’s like what they say in The Field of Dreams, “if you build it: they will come.” Despite the adversities we have faced (and will continue to face), we are more determined now than ever to continue working towards our goals.
