Today we’d like to introduce you to Jametria Dawson.
Hi Jametria, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello, my name is Jametria Dawson. I was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee and this is my story. I use to be the type to hide behind my talents, I always lived within my doubts and was often discouraged. I always thought the worse outcome when starting a project, and after starting I would pull back in fear. Yes, that was my mindset up until December of 2020 when I experienced a life-changing event. The change that had occurred was not for the worse but has me continuously questioning my car accident. During this time, I recalled developing my moisturizer, purchasing the supplies to manufacture and package my product, to start my life as an entrepreneur. Despite having everything that I needed to begin my business I procrastinated. I feel as if my procrastination was fueled by fear up until January 22, 2021. On that day I was in a car accident suffering minor injuries that required me to be in physical therapy and out of work due to back pain and lifting restrictions. I was mightily discouraged and felt like giving up at the time. I began to question why this happened to me. I remember crying so much, letting my emotions run wild like a tornado to a trailer, and I was completely devastated and lost. One week after the car accident I woke up with a driven mindset and I realized that I’d be living off of my savings until my disability kicked in from my employer. I knew I had to start pushing my hair product immediately. The more I thought about it my mentality began to change. I manufactured my product, created a website for online purchasing, and named my business “Luxury Length Collection” so I could obtain my business license. I had nothing to lose at this point. I had the time and a renewed mindset that enabled me to jumpstart my business. The car accident that I was in could have cost me my life but God chose to spare me for a reason. I knew I had a purpose for my life and it was up to me to make it happen. I immediately started promoting and posting my business on social media which was the beginning of gradual growth. After I got my car repaired, I hit the streets to promote and sell my product to different people in public and in various businesses. I invested 100% effort and was receiving 100% results. I traveled so much around different areas of Nashville that I ended up gaining two barbershops to wholesale my product out for in-store purchasing. The first shop, Distinguished Gentleman, and the second shop, being Top Chops Barbershop are both located in Nashville, Tennessee, and continue to support my journey today. Recruiting these businesses enabled me to sell enough product to manage bills and keep the business afloat. All was going well until I received some bad news that required me to go through a biopsy procedure that forced me to shut my business down for about a week. The biopsy went well and eventually I was able to return back to work in May. Upon my return, my prayer was that I remained strong enough to maintain my work schedule and my business. I did I found myself overwhelmed but I knew I couldn’t give up. Today I continue to work full time, I mange my business, and I am working on a new all-in-one oil product that promotes eyebrow, eyelash, hair, and beard growth and also promotes healthy skincare that will be launching soon. I have attended four Pop Up Shops and continue to maintain my full work schedule in addition to catering to my business as well. I have the support from many friends, family, and work-family to keep going, although the startup was challenging, I overcame everything with the help of God. He allowed me to start something that I wouldn’t have started due to lack of confidence, doubting myself, and hiding my talents. I thank God for creating the mindset to succeed and giving me the inspiration that I needed to begin this new journey in life.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Starting Luxury Length Collection was not an easy start-up, due to being in a car accident prior to completing the startup of my business. What I struggled with the most was making the product while not being fully recovered from the accident was a toll on my body. Also, finances were a struggle for me due not being able to work. In addition to that not having a positive mental state starting out, I found it difficult to be confident within myself and my product.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Outside of my business, I work at a factory that fabricates metal. Before my car accident, I was a punch operator, but when I returned to work, I was switched to a brake operator due to back restrictions. I form parts that are used for different types of things and, I have been with the company for 4 years. I am known for being a hard worker, a good listener, a team player, and motivator. I can say throughout this journey I am most proud of my growth and potential. I’d never see myself taking risk and putting myself out there to the world, but now I am exceeding and slowly working my way towards the top. Last but not least what sets me apart from others is not caring about how many followers I have, or who doesn’t support me. Sometimes that can be the reason why some people get discouraged and give up on their business, due to not having a huge platform of followers but I am not that type of person.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
The advice I’d like to leave to those entrepreneurs who are just starting out is that no matter how much money you make, or how popular you get, stay true to yourself, your business, and try to give back to the community in some way when you have overachieved goals throughout your journey. In addition to that, continue to live out your dreams, and achieve it, believe it, and you will succeed it!
