Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrés Pinedo.
Hi Andrés, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well, my main occupation is to sell copies from my first printing of my book ‘Apply’ and to generate new novels on Wattpad.com, website where was born ‘Apply’ too. All were started from my uneasiness from to write a book that leaves a legacy. I couldn’t to write properly because I thought that my novels were tedious. Then in parallel to read the ever-recommended Ulises from James Joyce (and never to finish it) and the advice of my father who always commented on art tag (I can remember yet that situation, after a dinner after a pair of cups of wine and telling him that all is lost), then everything gradually and slowly took shape, but nothing took shape automatically, it was rude: first I didn’t think in some website that could to content my writings, but I was approximately written 20% of a novel and I knew this was worth it because the enthusiasm that made me on reread it 🙂 But gradually, Engineering assignments (my other profession) were decreasing and, without asking, I began to have more and more time to write. Then I finished ‘Apply’ (then, my first serious novel), and with nothing to do because a suggestion I found Wattpad.com, and then, I started on there. It were inspired from the formation and for the circumstances, but clearly, I was finding my true vocation on the road. The business model suggested by my publisher, Mago editors, was to place the first 3 chapters on Wattpad from ‘Apply’ and leave the remaining 5 in the physical edition. ‘Apply’ is a novel (2017) that plays intensively with the beliefs from the protagonist and his perception on happening in circumstances. Circumstances refer to overcoming a challenge in which it seems that it will never reach the end. The challenge is simply a job interview to which you are invited despite maintaining unwanted results or sometimes huge stumbling blocks. However, the protagonist persists and persists, and that “determined” profile enchanted many in my town, making many feel identified. That’s why it is called ‘Apply’, as it is the perseverance in applying for a job.
After going to my editor, I planned to distribute my book ‘manually’ in libraries all over Chili (in parallel to the distribution of Mago editors) and sell some copies in digital format to incoming friends on Facebook, well: after publishing, many people sent me friend request and… I made my network on Facebook, and, Instagram is to publish some ‘hipster’ photographs and sporadically promote my books. This mechanic accompanied me on promote and sell copies and then slowly and gradually understood that people loved the cinematic scheme from ‘Apply’ but loved most the POETRY experiment within and the descriptions and how the book make you dive into ‘the magic’, into the psyche of the protagonist and all of that… retrieving that fact, eventually I planned the book Las Cimas Luminosas (literally The Luminous Peaks) and slowly publishing digitally in Wattpad where I received comments of all kind: but mostly that the locations, that the situations, that the prose-poetry in the writings make the reader relax and feel in the city where all happens. It’s curious that postmodern literature makes you desire a book with too much dialogues and less description, but in this case, it’s all upside down. Humbly I think this is the best thing I made and then, now, I’m looking for a way to reach people en masse, the everyone’s dream. So, this was the way that my career was forged.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The first big struggle was to accept the everyday publishing on the social networks. It’s not that everyone come out damaged in that way, it’s that the thing is unimaginable. Before I was working in a SPA (to survive) and the human thing was priority on me and my patients. But then the idea of think semi compulsively in creating some content make me freaking nervous. But eventually, I could accept it and create some quality content, make some new networks, laugh with others content, etcetera… As I was creating novels, I was thinking about things that would bring inspiration to future novels and marketing tricks for social networks and so on… Critical times? yes, they had, especially when I was writing La Casa Impía (literally The Unholy House), a short tale book, when Chili exploded in the so-called El Estallido Social, a situation of political effervescence on October 2019 that to this day is having consequences, and made me wonder that the initial idea for which I decided to write would have been diluted. But I’m strong, I was strong in that critical times and decided to continue. The most important part is to accept some things stoically that is a personal trademark from my paternal family and flexibility form my maternal family, and the mix of two made me in some way have that ‘stoic power’, in the other hand: creativity was inspired from childhood experiences and to believe in the power of emotional stories and some: in stories that make you think some different.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Mostly I do to create content to promote my (digital) books and write my books when I need to get over a threshold of some variable (visits, followers, votes, reach…) I put myself studious to get that objective, I will try to absorb some marketing slide that could help me, I will try to manage some image that can help…, BUT I won’t modify my book content to get it and I think it’s the most important part. My specialization is art and I won’t move from art, my goal is to be ever myself in the book content that I release to the net. Maybe this can sets me apart from others, maybe not… but I think this made to progress in what I want to do, creating a style and a structure to “the next project” being at least endearing to the people that is next to me when a story keeps in my mind for a long period then I think I had accomplished my goal, and it is published on Wattpad. Then I will use all of my creative power 🙂 to promote that, when I was a child, I draw some and knew the basics… then I’d say to myself “It could be illustrated for the title page (thumbnail in Wattpad) in such a way” and then I will do it.
The thing is not to come first, but the one who does it most eagerly, most transparent, and in the most heart-way.
Finally, Analytics is one part of all, but I won’t lose the opportunity to be myself. I think it is the part most I’m most proud of.
What are your plans for the future?
I think it’s important to generate more YouTube content. Video is the next main. More book Trailers and more books with book trailer, to put more attention to the detail and so. It’s very easy to see an idea on mind and to project-that in a Wattpad book (I mean, it’s long to do it, that is the difficulty) and to describe which were the landscape that inspired me and so on, but arm yourself with enthusiasm and determine to create a good book trailer even if it hurts is from gods. Yet I think is important to do better description (synopsis) from my work to promote the readings… people in Chili read very little and all We can do for to encourage the reading is a formidable effort.
