Conversations with Marleah Liddle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marleah Liddle. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Marleah JoAnn is a singer/songwriter based in Nashville, TN. Marleah recalls singing more than talking as a child. Even now I find if my emotions are too heavy for words, I can always explain myself better in life through songwriting. After graduating from Columbia College Chicago with a B.A. in music, she sang in many bands around Chicago before moving to Tennessee to pursue a solo career in original music. Upon arriving she toured as a background vocalist with Americana/southern-rock artist Donica Knight while finishing her own album. Her first album Amygdala was more of an eighty’s alternative, pop, rock, groove concept album with hints of Stevie Nicks, Kate Bush, the Prentenders. In her second album, you can hear the influence of Chitown reflected by her sultry mix of Blues, Jazz, R&B, and Retro Rock, Groove on her album “Without You”. Both albums ooze of bass-driven gritty, soulful timeless sound with lyrics as quirky as her personality. Currently, recording music with her Producer Saul Zonana in Franklin, and will release music slowly with videos for each single. People have less time and attention spans to listen to a full album dropped in twenty-four hours. Give them a slow and gradual sound experience, while making sure they have something visual to match, keeps fans engaged long-term. Over the first half of 2022, she will be releasing four new singles with music videos and livestream shows to match. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There is nothing smooth about being an artist while working five days a week, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Really good music reflects the dark and light of life and it’s all worth it in the long run. I’m blessed, grateful, and never see failure in any artist as long as they keep creating, they are always successful. Always create for yourself while keeping your brand in mind continue to evolve. There will be people that disapprove no matter what you do, Keeping everyone happy turns art into a nihilistic, boring, sterile, and soulless experience. Create your artist image but stay true to you. 

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for shocking everyone with my strong voice, being that I’m only 4’11”. Yes, I have a good amount of soulful. Groove-based love songs, but a lot of my content is based on my own personal life experiences -outside of intimacy. Also, I write about social unrest- heard in my soon-to-be-released song “America-weighing us down” and already released “Without You” is about my father passing away. My life is reflected in my music. I am most proud of being able to create and market myself as an unsigned artist while living a balanced life. I put every ounce of energy into my music, and even if I work 8 to 4, I’m in the recording studio from 5 to 9 pm. I’m unique because I’m not trying to please everyone with my music and Image. I love what I create, and if I change something it’s for the product not for people. I highly appreciate my fans and I know I’ll always have a real base because I stay true to my vibe, sound, and making the product and art as quality-driven and authentic as possible. I’m not trying to create to fit into the top 40, but if it happens, I’ll take it! 

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Currently, I’m looking for management and booking to take me over because I’m doing everything myself. However, I am working with a Chicago-based social media and marketing company called everyday success team. My manager, Osiris the skater, works for this company- and is now one of the top five hip-hop/rap artists in the country. He was able to do this because he let this company take his talent, brand, and image to the next level. Point being, you can be really talented, but without true financial and time investment all the hard work, writing, recording, and photoshoot just collects dust. You have to invest in your brand and get with a marketing company to build your following online. They took me from 2000 followers to 11000 and I have a lot more growing to do. Always keep building your brand and marketing your music. Also, I learned that releasing music as singles w videos, livestreams, and other content online is a better investment in the beginning while building a following, because you can reuse the content. Also, if you are spending money on a live show at a venue, have a theme or reason for doing it, because it costs money. Always promote it on Insta live or YouTube so you can get thousands to tune in as opposed to just the fans at the venue. Always own the room and Create, Brand, market and use your money wisely, while staying grounded, grateful and confident.
