Meet Austin Anthony

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Anthony.

Hi Austin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began taking photos back in high school and was good enough at it that I wanted to go pro. So, I Googled “best photojournalism school” and that brought me to WKU where I got my degree in 2014. In my senior year, the local paper offered me a job and I accepted it, working there until getting laid off in 2020. Then I decided to try to go on my own as a freelancer and here I am today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Working as a journalist for a local paper had its own challenges of low pay and long hours, and just a day-to-day drag sometimes. Being independent presents some different challenges like how to convince people to hire me. Or how to convince people that better photographic presence online is good for their business. Or how to fund gear purchases.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I kind of view myself as a do-it-all photographer. With a background in journalism, I’m really prepared for any situation. A lot of people have told me to specialize but I’m going to fight that as long as I can because I really love variety. In that vein, I think my versatility really sets me apart. I can match styles to brands and not force my vision onto every project. I’m personally proud of the work I did covering tornado damage in Kentucky for the Washington Post. I love my community and am still heartbroken over the devastation, but strangers have told me my photos inspired them to donate and that means so much to me.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my fondest memories were taking my camera and sneaking into the abandoned prison near where I grew up. I would spend hours in there making photos and exploring.
