Rising Stars: Meet Tamara Gaudin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Gaudin.

Hi Tamara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After graduating college I moved to New York City and began my start in the world of fashion. I have worked in several spaces of the industry but found my “forever home” in the world of styling. I have styled it all from film, print, commercial, runway, and personal. And personal styling is where I have landed. Although I do pick up other freelance jobs from time to time, personal styling is what I do on a daily basis. I started working with a personal stylist which is where I began my journey into this specialized field. And after working with her for a time I ventured out on my own and started my own business. I work with clients all over the country.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When is anything ever just a smooth road?! At least not in my life! There are always challenges and my life and career are full of peaks and valleys. And it may sound cliche but the “hard” is what makes you better in life. It makes you more compassionate, more humble, gives you strength, patience, perseverance, and makes the rewards that much sweeter.

My dad always told me never to count the money until it is in the bank. There are have been countless times where I think I am going to land a new client and it falls through. And I have had people start working with me and then life gets in the way and they are not able to continue for one reason or another. I have also been part of teams who have worked with some amazing fashion designers and brands and through no fault of our own, they have decided to work with other people. In many parts of the fashion industry loyalty is fleeting. You can work your tail off and everyone can be happy and then a new person is hired to the company and they want to bing their friend along to do your job so they are in and you are out. I have just learned never to count on anything in my business. All I can do is work hard, be honest, humble, and kind and then have to trust that I will be taken care of.

And 2020 was a VERY hard year for me with Covid. It took the fashion industry and my business down. Obviously, those are unprecedented circumstances and nothing I have ever dealt with before, but nonetheless something I had to survive.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a stylist and have been working as a stylist for over a decade. I also have worked a lot in production with fashion shows. I have really done it all from TV and film to print but my main focus is my personal styling business TG Stylist. With my focus being on personal styling I work one on one with clients. I organize their closet, shop for them, coordinate outfits for them, help them decide what to take on trips. I love being able to work closely with people and I can honestly say my clients have become my friends. We are equally invested in each other’s lives and I just love that.

I started my business having no idea what I was really doing and had never even thought about working for myself. I really enjoy working for myself and having something that I started that is all my own. There are challenges that come with it of course but I have found the ups outweigh the downs. Also being able to have been part of NYFW more times than I can count and going several times to work Paris Fashion Week is more than I would have dreamt. I have worked with so many different kinds of people from huge names in the industry, celebrities, and so many creative types. I love learning from my peers and seeing the unique ways in which they are gifted. I am a “learn as you go” type of girl so when I am immersed by others in my field I just love it!

I think all the experiences I have had over the years is what sets me apart from others who do what I do, The travel to different countries and all over the US, working with all different people, from all walks of life from all over the world is part of what makes me unique. My background is diverse and deep and I carry that with me in all I do. I am also not just a girl who likes clothes and likes to shop. Being a stylist is SO much more than that. If I dressed everyone like me I wouldn’t be good at my job. My job takes a ton of hard work but also the skill of listening well to what your client is telling you. And being able to have the creativity to put certain combinations and looks together all takes a talent and a specific gift.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have had so many cheerleaders along the way in my friends and family. Everyone has always been so supportive whether it was helping me figure out ways to grow and expand my business or to always be there to pass my name along to anyone that may be interested in working with a personal stylist.
